Why not add it to your house contents insurance as a specified item?

That is Plan B but I am reluctant to hand over any more money to Direct Line, who I only do business with through gritted teeth.

Goggle search:

Specialist cycle insurance is not cheap, the addition to your house insurance may be better value, but check the details of the cover.

Check out the CTC cyclecover policy. It's is new for old and covers the bike away from home including outside the UK

Direct Line have been excellent for us as insurers. Quick to respond, efficient and reliable. I recommend them over any other insurer I have ever used.

If its mainly the bike you're looking to insure, rather than you and the bike, be careful and as ever read the small print. With some insurers you almost have to go bed with the bike and not ride it anywhere outside of your hallway..... I've taken the risk, not bothered, and haven't had a need to claim in 8 years. And now my £1k mountain bile is probably worth a few tenners on eBay. Tony

As per the last two posts from Tony and Bruce, the CTC insurance would not be the least expensive, but the cover is designed for the real world of actually using your bike in the wild as it were.

Obviously if the insurance has a number of significant exclusion clauses, then it will be cheaper. A question here of getting what you pay for I would think.

Spend the money on a good lock instead. Don't subsidize the careless and fraudulent by buying insurance that you can live without.

CTC is a good group with a worthwhile aim though, and if I HAD to buy insurance, I'd consider supporting them.

I used to have CTC insurance, then realised my expensive bikes were never out of my site on rides and it was in a very secure place when at home.  So I let the insurance go ....

Spot on. Manage the risk, don't just pay someone else to assume it.
