User friendly NAS for MacMini

Posted by: Karaca Kestelli on 06 August 2012

New to the forum. Just purchased a Uniti.  Loving it so far.

I tried to stream from my Macmini. Was able to operate with playback. No luck with allegro though. Allegro synced to my uniti, but somehow couldn't read my music library at macmini.  I teied playback following some of the threads in this forum.  And it works,

My issue is, I am not sure whether Playback is the right NAS for me.  For one thing, once I go to one of the genres, i stead of listing artists in that genre, it directly lists all the tracks. And that becomes pretty annoying.

What software would you recommend to use based on your experiences.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. I don't list by gendre, but for everything else Playback makes a great UPnP server for my iTunes managed library. I've tried most of the servers and this is (still) the best for serving an iTunes managed library.

A nas is a 'network attached storage' device.

I think you are asking after a suitable upnp server.

Sadly macs come up rather short in this regard.

Google MINIMSERVER.

Currently free to download and available for MAC as well as PC & Linux. An efficient UPnP media server. Worth a try

Thanks a lot Geoff.  I'll look into MINIMSERVER before I purchase PLAYBACK...

Vortexbox has a great little iTunes server.

Thanks for all the info you shared.  I settled for playback though it has its own drawbacks.

Playback was the only server I was able to actually make it work.  So I went for it.

MINIMSERVER did work - but only 30% of my library.  It was pretty interesting to see which songs it'd accept to play.

On the Vortexbox, I became lazy and gave up on navigating within the vortexbox forum.

I have used EyeConnect. It does what I need and it is free for music. However, I also decided to get a free-standing NAS, set up as a RAID, so that it is in theory self-backing-up. This made sense to me since when I bought my UnitiQute I had not bothered to rip any of my classical CDs, and I was planning to rip them uncompressed. ITunes I use chiefly for lighter stuff, for which I am less interested in the best possible sound.
