empty music library...!

Posted by: ken c on 11 August 2012

today i noticed while playing my UnitiServe/SSD, that the music library would intermittently show empty in all the folders -- as if nothing had been ripped. However, this would come back after 5 minutes or so. as i recall, this started happening when i installed the new virgin superhub -- i also noticed that u/s IP address to had changed from the previous value that i had assigned, i.e. 192.168.0.103 to 192.168.0.104 -- this may be what is causing the problem, but i dont know for sure and i didnt see a way of changing it when i logged on to the superhub.

can anyone shed light on whats happening here? i never had this problem with the previous virgin setup. its very annoying since it will simply stop playing when this happens...

many thanks,

Have you got indendent, unplugged back-up?

Sounds very risky to me.

Hi Ken,

Have you reserved an IP address for the NAS?. There does appear to be a frequent problem with the Superhub (?) resetting itself back to default settings.

I would consider an alternative router. My latest netgear router has been installed now for some two years and I have never had an issue. I also have 16 reserved addresses on it.

yes, i have checked that the ReadyNAS Duo has a static IP address assigned, and it is also the same as what i had before this superhub changeover. i had to have virgin change the 1st superhub because of other issues, now since this 2nd one was installed, this issue has come up. anything else i should check?

perhaps i should really consider using the superhub in modem only mode and attach a router? would that resolve this particular problem?

I think George is suggesting you have a back up that is then removed from the system and stored away is some cupboard. If your back up is connected then there is a risk the "system" could wipe the back up as well

Ok, thanks...

but anymore suggestions on how to fix the problem that i describe? i guess the other experts have been watching the marathon and will be along soon?

whats funny is that in the IP lease table, the device name for the NAS drive is 'Unknown' although it has the correct MAC address

i cannot see in the admin interface for the superhub how to change this? any ideas from people who know?

Ken,

I do not think the lack of a device name is important, and you probably will not be able to rename it. But I have no experience with the Superhub. If your Router is continually resetting itself to default, which is a possibility you may need to exchange it or get  different one, using it as a modem perhaps.

thanks Gerry -- i didnt think so either, but just thought i'd ask

i am powercyclying my NAS drive right now to see if this makes any difference -- perhaps should have done this before connecting to the new superhum, dunno...

any more thoughts anyone?

cross fingers. i rebooted the NAS drive, and for good measure also the US/SSD. i just remembered that the virgin engineer just disconnected the faulty SuperHub and connected the new one -- without an powercycle. dont know whether this was the issue, but i will find out whether i experience this 'disappearing act' over the next few days.... anyone else experience this?

and George -- i have also double backed up my music onto a separate usb drive -- a bit of overkill i think, but no harm done --  i was a bit surprised to pay less than £80 for 2TB!!!

If your isp uses certain dns servers like OpenDns and another I forget the name, this will in some way conflict with the Naim server, resulting in an empty library.

Not aware of this being an issue or how this would cause an empty library ... I think this one might be a "red herring" unless you can give us some further information that would allow us to confirm this or otherwise?

I guess the readynas uses twonky, has the readynas auto updated a firmware which may also upgrade the twonky release? The reason I mention this is the qnap range of nas units occasionally upgrade twonky when a firmware update takes places, this clears the library and a rescan is needed to bring the library back. This may not be your issue though Ken.

thanks Sean,

i dont understand enough to comment, but i have re-scanned a few times now and the problem still occurs. i dont know if i explains that this problem is intermittent.  the library disappears and then after a while comes back. its a "now you see it, now you don't". i am able to play music till it just suddenly happens and all goes quiet.

i suspect it has something to do with the superhub as i number of people here have alluded -- i have now got a separate router now so that i can use the superhub in modem only mode -- and attach a dedicated router. wish me luck setting this up -- hopefully the documentation is clear as i dont know a bit even if it bit me :-)

It maybe the way to go Ken, after a quick google on the virgin superhub it appears to be a troublesome device. Good luck

Mine lasted as long as it took for Virgin to issue a firmware update that had "cablemodem mode" included in it...

There's supposedly a SuperHub2 coming out by the end of this year but I have no idea whether it'll be any good - I doubt it though as generally ISP supplied routers are simply there so they only have one unit to support.

i know mine supports this modem only feature -- so at least this bodes well. cross fingers for smooth installation -- perhaps sometime tomorrow...

The problem you tried to solve on my computer a few weeks back, was solved after a hard reset of the router, and Ihad changed my isp dns servers to OpenDns. The hard reset solved the problem, another user experienced the ssame problem with another non standard dns service, there is  a thread on that a few weeks back.

I am not going to test it again.

To me the following an my own experience suggests the fish is alive and well.

I encountered something similar with my Unitiserve SSD with the share folder being lost and the Unitiserve seemingly stuck in scanning mode.   After quite a bit of digging, I found a number of references to the "web address help" facility provided by BT and many other ISP services (seems to afflict Sonos) - this (referred to as a Barefruit service) can be disabled.  The apparent  reason it affects the local network was quoted as follws "if the router runs a DNS server which also handles local name resolution, it turns out that web services like this can mess things up for hardware devices like Sonos which are expecting a standard error code to be returned so that they can do a retry"   All I can say is that since doing this a few months ago, the connection has been solid......posting this will no doubt bring the gremlins back out to play!
