Music snobs are generally worse than Hifi snobs. 

Don't let them bother you. 

If I ever spew what I don't like in music, noone will ever speak to me so generally I keep my mouth shut. 

Of course generally you get out of the forum what you put in, and I reckon I've got lots of music tips from various threads. I hope I've suggested a few too.

If a thread is snobby/bitchy I just don't bother with it. Look away, and stick to discussions that are useful and relevant to you.

I've never felt anyone was judging my taste in music on here.

I looked through the recent threads, and I really can't find much evidence for this assertion. OK, there's one about pretentious bands that has now become very funny, and one about "All the bands I like..." that basically just confused me (I think the first post is a bit tongue-in-cheek - or at least I hope so. Oh wait, that was your thread. Ignore what I just said.). The Led Zep thread has some criticizing the band's ongoing poularity, I guess.

Everything else seems to be pretty positive, IMO. I've been put onto a LOT of great music by this forum. I don't listen to the radio, and this is where pretty much all of of my new music is first suggested to me.

Sorry to hear you are leaving the forum ... music is an emotional thing and we are all inclined to state our likes and dislikes. It is very easy for me to say something is dreary and dull when I really mean I don't like it. 

Some of my favourite bands have been derided hereon and elsewhere - it has been unfashionable to admitting a love of ELP even though they made 5 of the best records ever created and have a keyboard player second to none (some even suggest Keith's musical prowess is a bad thing). Some folk even knock the Beatles .... For me it is possible to like VDG/PH, the Clash and Kate Rusby ... I even like the Smiths, but don't tell My Lord Emsworth. I also like Caravan, Camel, Creedence Clearwater, Colosseum, Cochise, Chas & Dave, Country Joe & the Fish and whole host of other bands that begin with 'C'.  

I, in turn, am not great fan of .... well I think everybody knows and I probably harp on about it more than I should. 

However, it is great to read your posts and your enthusiasm for music. 

The same is true of kit, we all tend to like what we have (well we should if we bought it and use it) and don't like some other bits, but people are very sensitive if you say you don't like something they have spent a lot of money on, but are happy to say they don't like your favourite piece of kit. 

I'm afraid, it's the way it is somethings will never change. 

So please visit again ... things change.

I am sad to hear you are dipping out. It is often said of forums that "the love you take is equal to the love you make". 

On reading your posts I would venture to say you have put in more than you have taken out. It is clear you take time and energy to expound on music. And we have become the richer for it. I discovered Redshift in large part due to you. Your writings on Tangerine Dream were just a recent example of your passionate love of music. Adrian gave me a copy of Live in Santiago entirely courtesy of your good self. Your input is really valued.

The forum will be poorer without you. Stu is right - dip out for a bit but come back please. Actually, Jamie, Stu, George, Kuma, and Winkyincanada (no offence to others not mentioned) - you are all such diamonds. You contribute so well. Hang in there.

Contributing to a music forum like this takes effort. Kuma's re-issue thread is an example of a mine of information. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth spending the energy to add to it. It isn't just about the time writing. Music is such a passion for us that there is an emotional expense writing about it. And there are times when people are ignorant. Or, perhaps worse, ignore you. It can hurt in fact. And then the forum becomes a (literal) pain.

Maybe its about finding a way to contribute without it becoming too personal. I don't know. 

Jamie, we have not met but you have made a difference to my musical journey and I thank you. I know you are in touch with Adrian, who I go to gigs with plenty. I enjoyed meeting SteveH at the last SW show, and then met again at his place. That's an example of what can be brilliant about this forum.

Maybe we will hook up at a gig before long - I want to ask you about which Orb LPs are essential.

Perhaps you could let me know before you do dip out??

Thank you for the replies, and good to get the emails from a few friends too.

I will continue to look at the forum from time to time, but will no longer contribute.

As I did like to take time to try compose my comments, I did indeed find that I was getting far less out of the forum than the time it took up. Now with a young child, work commitments and other interests, that time is just not worth spending here, sorry.

My final decision was made after the recent Yes thread was posted, and the hijacking of the Led Zeppelin thread by someone with an axe to grind. I felt that both showed disrespect to others musical tastes, tastes that could quickly be judged with a glance at the 'What are you listening to' thread.

I tried to make a joke thread to quietly make my point about such threads with the 'All the bands I like ...' posting, but in the end, I felt why bother.

So again, thank you for you replies, and I will keep in contact by email, or elsewhere with those friends I have made here.

Glad you changed your mind. I have enjoyed some of your posts and replies,including one to the above mentioned, and I hope to see many more. As for "disrespect", that was the last thing on mind and I believe also in those 100+ who replied to the thread. I voiced an opinion and some members agreed, others did not and quite vehemently. I believe all of them are still active members.

I suspect you've jumped onto the Led Zep thread without reading it's entirety. There is no criticism of Zeps music or criticism of Zep fans. In fact the only criticisms are aimed at Robin Trower and Montrose.

I can't understand why you believe the thread was highjacked. The OP gives information about the book and the posters opinion of the book. It also quotes a statement from the publisher describing the book.

My reply quite clearly only refers to the publishers statement. How on earth can this be interpreted as showing disrespect to others musical tastes.

Sounds Awful, was meant to be humorous, but I guess only aficionados of the quotations of Marvin The Paranoid Android would appreciate it.

The post was very funny, but the first half isn't actually having ago at people who slag off musicians/bands, it's having a go at people who claim this or other musician/band are the greatest/best/biggest.

PS. Who's going to give us tips on using photoshop.

I thought the "Are Yes pretentious?" thread was funny and informative. I like Yes ( including Olias of Sunhillow and Tales of Topographic Oceans!) and can't understand why they, and other bands from that era get so much critisicism, but there's nothing in that thread to cause offence. In fact, I will be using Jamie's commendations to check out Porcupine Tree (I only have The Incident). The only problem I had with Fatcat's Led Zep posts was that he thought their success in the '70s was a media invention (factually incorrect). It never occurred to me that this could be a reason to leave the forum!

But perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this thread is Jamie's new avatar. The old one was one was very jolly. Come back Jamie, but only if you go back to the old avatar :-)

....IMHO you don't presume that because someone else actually says he likes those new discs that you don't want to spin he is an utter nutter. And more to the point, you don't actually tell the utter nutter that he is an utter nutter.

I'm not suggesting that you have ever done this winky, and I don't know the background to why the OP has decided to leave, but I'm assuming somebody, inappropriately, suggested he was as utter nutter. If so, a pity IMHO.
