Forum Rugby Club 2012-13

Posted by: JWM on 20 August 2012

Well, only one more Saturday of pre-season friendlies before the 2012-13 Season begins.

Personally I can't wait, not least because I am now a proud Leicester Tigers Season Ticket holder. But, lest I'm accused of being narrow-minded, I begin with not with Tigers, but with one of the old enemies, Gloucester Rugby. Very interesting choice of Big Jim Hamilton for captain ... he'll certainly set an example in a handbaggy punch-up, but I don't mean of measured self-control!

It's going to be an interesting Season up front, with a revised scrum command and the introduction of a 5-second 'use it' hurry-up by the ref for static rucks. Hopefully this will end the 'centipede' whilst allowing creative driving forward play to continue. And so also no winding down the clock by holding a ball in a ruck, that'll be an interesting one...

And there's going to be more possible TMO involvement. I can see the potential, but last season some refs went to the TMO for almost every Try, unclear or clear. I hope it won't entrench a culture of institutionalised indecision that could erode confidence in referees. We'll see.

Oh, and by the way (in case you'd forgotten): TIIIIIIII-GERS!

I've got tickets for England v ABs. Woohoo!

Just heard the announcer at the Ireland v South Africa game appeal for the 'long-standing tradition' of silence during goal-kicking for both teams to be upheld. Booing this is a recent phenomenon and it is sad that it should have to be appealed for at a rugby match.

Mark,

I misted the live game early this morning.

I concur.....

Should only do this against Wasps.......

What goes around comes around. While Wasps may have been struggling to get their feet out of the honey trap, I find I now look forward to the time Tigers find themselves cornered...

Well done you! (Jealous, not...)

England spurned 9 easy second half points and lost by 6. Some naive decision-making there cost them the game. They weren't at their best and couldn't break the Aussie defence, but could and should have won by converting the immense pressure they applied in the last 20 minutes into points.

There were some pluses. The substitutions livened up England. They were much better in the scrum when Vunipola came on for Marler and Launchbury showed what us Wasps have known for a while; that he will be a world class lock.

All of that said, the England players still lack the basic ball skills to properly execute Lancaster's plan and Australia found it relatively easy to defend. Robshaw should have seen this and instructed Flood to kick the penalties. Johnno, as captain, would have recognised the shortcomings and done this.

Wasps keep their unbeaten run at home this season going with a 28-19, three try win over Worcester. Big Ashley Johnson named MOTM. Next week against Leicester Tigers we aim to make it 6/6 at home
