New update out - not certain of the differences yet.

Why are Naim not doing an update for Mac? i will also have to find a Windows PC.

Posted on: 21 August 2012 by Goon525

Does anyone know why the intermediate upgrade to 3.13 is 'recommended'? Like most of us, it seems, my SU is running 3.09. I'm just curious, I'll do as I'm told, but I do wonder why it's not a requirement, just a recommendation.

Simon can you help please?

I have the NDX also. How did you update yours?

Posted on: 21 August 2012 by Simon-in-Suffolk

Unclegaz, I borrowed my sons windows laptop he uses for school, downloaded the firmware from the Naim website. Plugged a USB to RS 232  patch lead between laptop and back of NDX (little RS 232 port on the back near mains lead). Made sure the laptop was on the same network as the NDX. Run the executable that I downloaded from Naim. Select the com port that connects to the NDX, and then the software does the rest... The NDX display advises state of the upgrade. It takes a few minutes.

If you get stuck with this I'm sure Guido Fawkes of this forum can help you out!

Very happy. The nStream finally does the stuff we've been waiting for. Thanks Naim.

Very interesting about the SQ improvement Simon. I'll have a listen tomorrow.

Also, does it blow all of one's settings, so one's starting from scratch with all the input names etc etc?

Posted on: 21 August 2012 by Hook

Nice improvement!

I was still at level 9, and headed the warning to install 13 before 16.  Both updates went very smoothly.

Have never been a big playlist guy (usually just play albums end to end), but am tempted to give it a shot.

nStream has gone from very fast to... instantaneous!  And despite the fact that I had gotten pretty good at guessing which dot represented which letter, I am relieved to finally see the alphabet along the right hand side!

Have a full evening of listening ahead, starting with my second listen to Dead Can Dance's new album.  My initial impression is that Simon is correct on sound quality improvement.  I am hearing a bit more bottom end clarity, as well as top end sparkle.  Brilliant update all around then.  Well done Naim!

The updater did say it was resetting my NDX to factory defaults, but as far as I can tell, my settings are as I left them.  IIRC, the NDX's analog output is turned on by default, but I turned it off for my setup.  This setting didn't change back to on after upgrading.

This is a ridiculous upgrade process!!!

My Superuniti is not recognised by the install program even though laptop and Super are wired into the router. Total pain!!!

Hook, spot on bottom end and top end sparkle... I didn't say it to see if anyone else noted it.. And you did :-). Listen further and that extra clarity adds to the layering and completeness.. I am genuinely surprised a firmware update can have this sort of effect through tweaking. Although Naim confirmed they had changed the DSP code they didn't share  what they had specifically done.

I also felt the improvement right after the upgrade. The highs were crisp and clear during late night listening. The lows were nice as well but didn't get the chance to crank up the volume.

Perhaps they improved some DSP algorithms, made them more efficient? Less processing, less noise? Makes me wonder how much more Naim can squeeze out of the ol' NDX...

Also, am very glad this update occurred well before any NDS comparisons!

PS - @CSI_Basel - did you try powering your SuperUniti off, wait a minute and turn it back on again?

Yep - looked at the instructions - nope I don't have and will not give houseroom to a Win PC.....

Yes I do need the new streamer board - do I upgrade my Uniti or trade in? SuperUniti?

Tog

Tog,

I was in the same place as you when the SuperUniti first came: Upgrade the board of the Qute or trade in? I went for the SU and have not regretted it at all. Go for it if you can.

Is it just me or has the album art on n-Serve 3.1 dropped to a lower resolution? Mine is 1000x1000 but the artwork shown on the track playing now looks like a scaled up 150x150.  Double checked the uPnP control point settings and also cleared the cache in n-Stream. Was fine on 3.0 previously.

This is on iPad3.  Anyone else got this issue?

Sorry no can do ... no more Naim streamers for me as I could never keep them up to date ... my UQ is out of date, but it sounds OK as it is so I'll just leave it at that. I have accepted that it'll never be possible for me to enjoy the latest firmware ... denied.

I still like my Naim DAC and Naim amplifiers, but I'll be looking elsewhere for a streaming solution - one where you just select software update and OK and don't need a degree in the history of MS PCs .... I don't think Naim has folk like me on its list of potential customers for streamers so it doesn't really matter ... another respected company makes a streamer that plays FLAC just as well as as any other lossless format, plugs in and works and can be updated over the network ... no Windows required and the underlying OS is Linux based ...

Oh no, I've said too much

You set me up
That's me on the forum
That's me with no firmware
Losing my revision
Trying to keep up
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you say good-bye
I think I saw updates without windows
But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

Lebowski, no pronlems with Album art here. Running ipad1 with Asset 4

So  am I understanding correctly....I have a mac therefore I can't  perform this upgrade ?

Posted on: 22 August 2012 by 0rangutan
You can update using a VMware or Parallels virtual PC on a Mac. Or by dual booting into Windows. If you run OS X only, your dealer can perform the update for you at no charge. Still not something to get so emotional about.

+1 peopleusing Apple IOS can run Windows on it within a Virtual Machine. As from their the process should run as indicated in the Naim hand-outs that come with the firmware update

Hello all

Naim are developing a native mac application for updating these products as I type. i'll be inviting people to join a beta testing program once its more stable

Would be nice to update using my mac. But given that the update works using vm, I am happy with the way its works.

And the time between updates is at the moment months, so doing the update twice a year via vm is fine.

For me its all almost perfect. Anyone have an idea of features in the next release?

I would just like to see that layout of n-stream a bit more like it is on the sonos app. Sonos uses the screen better, seeing the queue while looking for other music is very nice!

Is there a how to guide for the n-stream? I've created a playlist but can't find the option to play it It doesn't appear in the playlists option but I can add tracks to it when I click on the individual track - I see it as an option.

I see the below as a problem too.  As someone who is thinking of moving to an nserve or nstream product this is a bit of a concern....

Is there a solution?  is n-serve the same?

Does someone knows how to work around? I couldn't find an additional setting in asset controls.

A "how to" guide for n-stream would be really fine. Shure, it's a small application and most of the functionality is selfexplanatory or can be found by try and error.
But anyway, a small guide would be fine  perhaps there is something still existing?
