Slow initial response from nStream 3.1
Posted by: Steeve on 27 August 2012
Apologies if this has already been mentioned (I couldn't find it by searching) but I have a slight issue since upgrading to 3.16 and nStream 3.1.
If nStream hasn't been used for a few minutes when trying to access my library I initially get the message "Server unavailable" or if I am at the top "UPnP" menu then the message "No servers". If I wait, the expected lists do appear but can take anything from 10 to 30 seconds to do so (usually nearer to 10 seconds in fairness). If I keep using it everything works as expected - it is only when it hasn't been used for a while this occurs, although the period of inactivity can be as little as one minute. I would stress this is a totally new issue since upgrading and no hardware has changed.
I would also add that full and immediate access to my library is always available directly via the NDX itself using its own remote.
Does anyone know why this is and if I can cure it?
I am using NDX (3.16) and Asset uPnP running on a Zoneripper. These are connected via a Netgear Switch which in turn is connected to a Virgin Media Superhub. I repeat that no hardware has changed since the upgrade. nStream is running on an iTouch.
Many thanks
Steeve
P.S. I have tried turning EVERYTHING off and on again!
Hi Steeve, no I see this as well, it appears to be a bug that has introduced in the latest version of Nstream. Occasionally the 'wake up' delay becomes very long and I find connection completely fails between the NDX and Nstream and I need to switch the NDX off and on. I know of no way of going back a release on the Apple app download system.
I am sure Naim will be working on a fix shortly.
Simon
Ok thanks Simon.
Thanks for the reassurance; I'm glad it's not just me that's affected.
Other than that, things are looking really good with the app and my system has never sounded better.
Cheers

Hi Steeve and Simon -
Am also using NDX 3.16, nStream 3.1 and Asset (Release 4), and have not run into this. All my nStream responses, including the wake-up after playing a full album, are instantaneous.
Could this be some kind of interaction between nStream and our network hardware? Just as an FYI, my iPad connects to a Linksys/Cisco E4200 wireless router. It, along with my NDX and NAS, are all hard wired to the same 16-port Cisco 10/100 switch.

Hi Hook
You may well be right. I'm guessing most people are not affected as they haven't commented on it. However, it is certainly a new phenomenon with version 3.1 so hopefully there is a fix from Naim rather than having to buy new network hardware.
Steeve
3.1 is the first iteration I've used, having migrated from nServe. I do find it slow and unresponsive at times and not particularly fast any of the time. Had I not enjoyed a much crisper performance (for the most part) from nServe I would have probably got used to it without comment. If this is an issue which is being addressed I'll be in the happy camp too.
Harry,
For me, it's not a general slowness, it's more, as Simon says, as though the connection goes to sleep and has to wake up. Once it has woken up, response times are good navigating between all the different menus. But then leave it for a minute and you have to wait at least 10 seconds for a response and whilst waiting you get a "Server unavailable" message where you woulld normally see your list of artists, albums or whatever.

Hi Steeve -
Agreed 100%.
Was not suggesting that you should have to buy new network hardware -- just trying to assist with troubleshooting by providing some details from my own setup where this does not seem to be a problem. It may have nothing at all to do with network hardware. Just wondering aloud why this is working for me, but not for others using the same nStream and NDX versions, as well as the same UPnP server.
Hopefully you have already reported this to Naim, and a fix will be found soon.
Hook
Understood Steeve. I'm also experiencing sluggishness due to to communication issues and occasional loss of server (except not really). It looks like my network is flaky. But it isn't - as any other app including nServe will ably demonstrate.
I've noticed a few issues since updating to the new firmware (3.16) and nstream 3.1 on my ipad. I'm running an ND 5 XS connected via ethernet to PC with several WD NAS drives via twonky. I've noticed that the new app seems to have to reconnect regularly when I'm browsing through the server library and it has developed altzheimers with the artwork (i.e. it may show the album artwork when initially started up but will lose it later on and replace it with a black icon i.e. not the musical note icon). I've also noticed that the ND 5 XS screen doesn't seem to show the folder changes during browsing but only the track being played or "Stopped". I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app twice but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Hi Simon,
Don't think we have a bug in our application here unless you know something that we don't - can you provide us with some information so that we can identify it as a bug in our app or whether it's an issue with UPnP tunneling through the router now that the n-Stream software is the control point?
Cheers

It's sounding like the SuperHub dropping UPnP comms via WiFi (which it does) - can you try the unit on a different router?
Cheers

Phil,
Ok I will drop an email to support. There is an issue with the new app that I didn't see before. Sometimes the Nstream slows and slws until it freezes until a little popuptappers saying timeout error and the app fires up again.
PS I think I have also found that the app is more prone to trip up when searching through the online database info, but only with the Nstream / ndx communication. The previous version of Nstream that supported playlists worked flawlessly.
Update:
I am gettcore ore confident that it is linked to the playlist path validation algorithm... I notice for no apparent reasons arbitrary tracks in the playlist get marked in accessible whilst others are ok, and the NAS ip addresses have not changed and no file changes have occurred.could it be related to length of charcters in the playlist asset URL/path.

I am not using playlists, so perhaps this explains why I am not seeing this problem.

Hi
Will try out a different router next week and report back.
Thanks for all replies.

Hi Simon, going back a release on an iPhone is done by having access to a backup copy of the app this Cnet page tells you what to do it for both windows and Mac.
Ok, I've finally got around to trying out a new router and all is looking very positive so far.
I'm using an ASUS RT-N56U. Wow, what a difference in my wireless performance by not using the Superhub as the router!
Steeve
Might be being dense here, but just playing around...
I realise that the latest version of nStream has taken over more functionality, but I now don't seem to able to play any tracks directly using the NDX interface (i.e using either the NDX remote or the buttons on the unit itself).. It seems to happily display all the folders on the server, but when I attempt to play anything it just goes back to the top level menu of server names.
Any ideas?
Cheers
Steve
Hi Steeve -
Sounds like another case of RF causing problems with the Naim remote control logic?
Do you perhaps have a plasma TV nearby?
I'd guess that turning the NDX off and back on would clear this up.
ATB.
Hook
Hi Hook
I don't think it's RF interference. I get the same issue navigating with the buttons on the front of the NDX itself as well.
Turning the NDX did solve the problem initially, but what seems to happen is that when I play something from nStream and set up a queue, I'm finding I have to clear down the queue completely and then select another input and then go back to the uPnP input in order to regain control via the NDX.
Not a big issue as I plan to use nStream pretty much all the time now. I just wondered if I was missing something. Is this a feature of the new set-up or is there an easier way to switch control from nStream to NDX if and when required (e.g when my iTouch is not to hand or battery flat!) ?
Steeve
Hello,
I am having the same issue since I have upgraded the Uniti with 3.16 and using the latest n-Stream. My NAS takes like 1 minute to re-activate. Even when I am listening some music using n-Stream, if I want to change album, n-stream give me the message that there is no server. It can take a lot of time to re-activate.
The workaround I found, was to enable "compatibility mode" for UPnP in the n-Stream setup. You don't have the last features from the app, but at least the NAS is working as usual.
I would appreciate a feedback from Naim's support team.
Nas is LACIE wired connected - Uniti is wireless
best regards,
Alexis
Has anyone already a solution for this? I have exactly the same problem.

Can I ask specifically which problem?
Specific issues are much better addressed directly to Naim Tech support (support@naimaudio.com) as they can so easily go unseen on here due to the amount of traffic...

I have exactly the same issue as the topic starter. I will write an email to your tech support.
Apologies if this has already been mentioned (I couldn't find it by searching) but I have a slight issue since upgrading to 3.16 and nStream 3.1.

In that case I suspect that your issue is with your router or wireless access point not fully supporting UPnP traffic between the wireless and wired networks ... if you set the app to "UPnP Compatibility" then does it work as it did before (but of course without the playlist and alphabetic access within lists)?
Cheers
