Quick NAS queries

I want to add a NAS as my HDX nears capacity. The sensible thing would appear to be a dual-drive so I get a back up of the music store.

Q1) With a dual drive NAS would the drive back up automatically to its twin or does this need a running PC backup 'job'. I've never found a back up program I got on with generally which is why I ask!

Q2) Anyone recommend a nice quiet simple dual drive NAS? Quiet is important because of where it will likely be sited.

Readynas duo v2, is very quiet but it must be v2!

The automated backup of the files on the hdx runs without a pc, but you need to set it up, either through the desktop client, and I believe it also can be done by using the browser interface if you for some reason dislikes the dtc.

Since you are running out of space you will also have to setup a store the hdx can rip new disks to.

With 2 disks I suppose you want to mirror the disks or use raidd 1, so take care when you setup and format the disks in the readynas, I found  all the choices both raidd and the special format not raidd used on the Readynas a little confusing, and most of the times a change of format means all data must be backed up externally.

Bruce, i use a Synology unit. Have to say the setup is easy as could be. If you fit two HDD's then when setting up, use all the defaults and it will set it up in raid 1(mirrored) for you. Just keep in mind that this really shouldnt be used as your only backup.

Exactly!  And the Synology software makes backing up to an external (usb) hdd very easy.
