ND5XS: Changing volume from another App

Posted by: RexManning on 28 August 2012

Been again playing with nStream now for a couple of days, since I didn't like using the previous version and didn't use it after also trying that for a while.

Conclusion: great, but I am moving back to using the Synology DS-Audio app. Has been great for years and is incredibly mature. The only thing it can't do that I really miss: changing volume.

I was doubting whether to post this on a Synology forum, but decided to try it here first as I stand a better chance here to meet another Synology-Naim owner. Does anyone know if it at all possible to change the volume from another app than nStream? If so, I could ask synology to consider changing their app accordingly. Synology's audio station (or DSAudio) can change the volume of my other media renderers, and shows a volume option for the Naim, which I can not move.

I can not speak for the ND5XS but for the Uniti.

I have used different 3rd party Android apps which where able to control the volume of the Uniti.

That seems logical Stephan, as the Uniti is your streamer and your integrated amplifier. My other integrated amplifiers in the house also work with volume signals from different apps.

What the ND5XS however does is send a volume signal to the separate pre-amp. Unfortunately, it seems only nStream can deliver that signal.

Yes and no. I have had different apps, some can controlle the volume, some not.

Naim use two different Ethernet protocols to control the Uniti.

- a Naim specific protocol to control all (radio, CD, ...) except the streaming, including volume

- the AV UPnP protocol to control the streaming, including volume

Now, the question is, which protocol is nstream using to control the volume.

If nstream uses the Naim specific protocol, then it is clear that it can not work.

But I think they use the UPnP protocol. If I am right, the Naim streamer should not be able to detect which app (nstream or 3rd party) is used.

No - this is extremely unlikely as the volume control commands sent out from an ND5XS are not in the UPnP world ...

Thanks for the clear reply Phil !

Too bad though...

Yes, that is what I expected, but I also expected, that the ND5XS translates the UPnP command into a Naim specific command.

The question is, what kind of command (UPnP, oder Naim specific) nstream uses to control the amp.
