Make It In Great Britain

Posted by: Jon Myles on 01 September 2012

Well, having finally made it down to the Science Museum and popped in to Naim's display in the Make It In Great Britain section - that's it is it?

One Ovator speaker, an NDS in a glass cabinet with the top removed and a looped film about Naim. Even my wife looked at me as though I was bonkers. Her comment: "Is that the best they can do?"

My response was: "Well, perhaps they were busy elsewhere."

Seriously, deeply disappointing display.

Mind you, the Alan Turing exhibition is very good.

Perhaps they were trying to update the software and gave up.

I would commend the Alan Turing displays though. Strange to think that his work has a rather direct link to the streaming technology of today. Yet he committed suicide after being classed a security risk and hounded out of a job.

On Aan Turing, I would recommend a book by Neil Stephenson called 'Cryptonomicron' which I've just re-read. A big book (fiction) about many things but at least in part the origin of computers/Turing/Cryptanalysis etc. A really good read

Bruce.

Maybe we should have an Alan Touring appreciation thread!

Another brilliant man persecuted for his sexual preferences and certainly a crime against humanity by todays standards.

Did you take any photos Jon?

Hi Jason

Didn't take any photos. Really wasn't worth the effort.

As my wife said after I dragged her to it: "So, what's so special?"

I told her it was the sound.

Her reply, understandably, was: "So why can't we hear it?"

I was bereft of a reply.

On reflection, I've actually decided the whole display would actually deter me from buying Naim rather than encourage if I was a newcomer to the brand.

Luckily I'm not.

Another Alan Turing suggestion

The Bletchley Park site near Milton Keynes is well worth a visit. It's a great day out if you are interested in the Enigma code breakers and the development of early computers.
