Blu ray quality issue

Posted by: ray sheldon on 04 September 2012

All,

My first post outside 'hifi corner'.....

Wondering if anyone else experiences inconsistencies with blu ray disc quality.

I have the pioneer lx70a blu ray payer, a little dated but a fine machine that retailed for around £900. With that a pioneer vsx1019 receiver, also a decent bit of kit. A Sony HD 40" tv all connected with Chord HDMI leads( can't remember type, grey cable, one red plug, one grey, 1.3 something written on it, a popular cable).

Most blu ray discs look very good and it's hard to imagine that spending even more would bring more benefits. I'm overall quite happy, except that occasionally some discs look quite poor when watching a film. The picture looks quite 'snowy'. It's more noticeable on blacks and dark colours.

Ive noticed this on brand new films from blockbuster, yet some of my older discs look superb.

Can this really be an issue with poorly manufactured discs? ...is there something else going on with my equipment.  Although, HD tv is perfect too!

Ray,

Here is an article about badly transferred copies. Hope it helps to shed some light.

Tony, thanks. Incredible really.Makes you think twice before buying a film.

For older films, a blu-ray can be hit or miss. For example, The Firm (with Tom Cruise) received so much noise reduction and edge enhancement, the result looks like Nicole Kidman on a bad day. Another early-90s film, The Hunt for Red October, looks gorgeous (with all the film grain that you expect on a print from that age). The first BR release of Gladiator was so bad, the studio re-released a completely new mastering job, which is brilliant.

I haven't seen many issues with new films? They tend to be quite good, i.e. faithful to what was captured on camera. If that camera was a handheld, and shot in a dark environment, picture quality won't be very good but that is intentional and not an issue with the remastering.

Cheers,

EJ

Yes, I have gladiator and it's fine. What started this topic is that I hired all 3 films of 'the girl with the dragon tattoo(original release). That copy is good. Last night I watched '.....who played with fire' and that's terrible quality. All the logo's on the disc look consistent with the same manufacturer but they are clearly different quality.

My copies of "Girl With" etc. series are pretty variable too Ray. Definitely a different remastering for each one.

The archives volume 1 by Neil Young on blue ray is a pain to try and play, don't know what is wrong with it but I can't get sound out of some of the tracks and yet all the graphical info on the screen is there.

Blade Runner is one of my favourite movies. I have had a number of versions, DVD and Blu-Ray. The first DVD was appalling, but subsequent editions got much better. The latest Directors' Cut on Blu-Ray is essentially perfect, including some subtle enhancements to cover up some of the most egregious FX errors in the original (visible wires on the flying car, for one).
