transcoding on Synology DSM 4.1

Posted by: Foxman50 on 10 September 2012

Hi all

Does anyone use a Synology NAS, if you do do you know if they have fixed the transcoding problem of DSM 4 in media server, where transcoding of 96 or 192/24 FLAC files would be streamed at 44/16 WAV.

It works on DSM 3.2 and i dont want to upgrade unless i know it works, as my ND5 doesnt indicate the bit rate. At least i dont think it does???

No, this has not been changed in the latest version of DSM 4. I've had a long email conversation with Synology support on this issue. Reading between the lines, I don't believe that Synology see this lack of hi-res support as a "problem". I think they view transcoding as a way for streaming devices - such as an iPhone or iPad - to deal with incompatible files like FLAC and OGG. The change from DSM 3 to DSM 4 to down-res to 16-bit was a deliberate choice and potentially helps devices that can't handle 24-bit files. They have told me that they will forward my request to their engineers to consider offering an option for the transcode format .... but I'm not holding my breath.

Are there any features in the DSM 4 firmware (such as ezCloud) that you need to use? If not then I should stick with DSM 3.2.

Hi Ian

Many thanks for the reply. I only use the NAS to serve music to my ND5 so its not really an issue which version of Firmware i use on the Syn. You just feel an upgrade should be just that and not a downgrade. Its a shame because the interface is much nicer. Thanks again
