nStream and Router Selection

Posted by: Goon525 on 13 September 2012

Having had the same problems as many of you using my SU with its update, and the updates to nStream, I've just bought an Apple Airport Extreme and converted my Virgin Superhub to 'modem only'. The whole process was an absolute breeze, my iPad and iPhone can now 'see' my SU without being directed to an IP address, and I have been able to turn off uPnP compatibility mode without problems. I guess I'm confirming what Phil (got your TiVo sorted now, Phil?), Simon-in-Suffolk and others have been saying - it's all about router selection. I guess it doesn't have to be an AE, but the whole process whereby my iMac realised it had lost its wireless connection, found the new one, auto-launched the Airport Utility, and just worked throughout was impressive to behold.

Decent network hardware make a whole world of difference.... the broadband price wars seem to have led some suppliers to pick really cheap and nasty kit to bundle.

It really is the ability to support multicast on the wifi and wired elements of your LAN that are key here. The AE (Express and Extreme) does this well - and therefore your UPNP discovery and synchronization messages will now work - as well as AirPlay disvovery and synchronization should you use AppleTV etc

Glad you have it working.

Thanks for that. You have been most helpful both on this issue and the getting rid of Internet-over-mains one, and I very much appreciate it. But I do wonder whether Naim have given themselves a commercial headache when such a high proportion (perhaps the majority?) of routers seem to cause problems with the nStream implementation Naim have chosen. Not everyone will be prepared to do as I have done and throw quite a bit of time and money at solving it.
