Sampler CD's

There are some well recorded and interesting samples available on the Opus 3 label.

Some are a little difficult to find now, one of my favorites is the "Special 20th Anniversary Celebration Disc" which is a HDCD disc and features music from Eric Bibb, Bob Barnard, Frank Zappa, Beethoven, Schubert to name a few. Track 13, 'Gammal Fabodpsalm' from Horn and Organ Recital is amazing if you have full range speakers as it features a wonderful Church Pipe Organ. Not usually my thing I have to admit but that's the beauty of sampler discs

I have two preferred samplers (a genre I love myself):

One is the sampler that the French magazine Diapason enclosed for the 50 years of Harmonia Mundi:

and that I think can still be found with a little patience. It contains great musical examples in very good recordings. The choice is wide, the performers average excellent with a few high points.

The second is:

a 1987 release by EG records of electronic/minimalist music, with the best artists of the time.

Then, you could browse inside the ACT catalogue. They are a new and young record label specialized in jazz and ethnic music. They release a number of wonderful samplers, like this:

of a choice of their pianists.

had a look at the opus 3 site. No sign of a 20th anniversary album, but they do have a 30th anniversary one, maybe they have stopped producing the older one?

you're welcome. Samplers are an underrated category. Do some googling and you won't spend that much. Anyway, long live the CD.

2 new CD's just arrived. Best audiophile voices vol 3 and 7. Recorded in 24 bit / 192khz.

The sound is amazing, such beautiful voices.

Just bought a couple of sampler CD's called electrospective, to celebrate the history of electronica music. Nice mix of artists, and some of the tracks take me back to my youth

Worth a listen ( if you like electronica)

Just ordered a copy of the harmonia Mundi 10th sampler.

Will have a listen and continue searching for the 50th as listed above. No luck yet

Also, although not strictly a 'Label Sampler', more of a genre sampler these two have spun quite a few follow-up album purchases from me:

That's Proper Folk was a promotion disk for English Folk and sold for £1.99. It ended up selling over 10 times more copies than expected.

This is the follow up to That's Proper Folk and again has a lot of great music on it. The stand out for me is the track by Seth Lakeman, Blacksmiths Prayer, it is stunning (IMHO). Needless to say I went straight out and bought his album, "Tales From The Barrel House".

I have had Proper Folk for some time ,just ordered PF Too.

Paul , what do you think of Tales From the Barrel House? 

I found it a little sterile as  Seth had recorded all instruments, the songs he did last Saturday were more enjoyable live with the band.

Not heard it yet. Ordered the cd from amazon bu still not arrived

Looks interesting. Will do a search and check it out. Just ordered some Linn samplers to try

All the early CookingVinyl CD Samplers are very good,the SQ is also very good.

Volume 3 1994 and Volume 4 1995 still get played here a lot.

Good selection of Folk artists on them.

They can be picked up very very cheap now from amazon sellers.

The early ones are in the main Folk or Folk rock artists and bands from the UK.

Google  the Cooking vinyl record label.

You should be listening to the brilliant Kate Rusby and friends live in concert now if you like Folk music at its best.

Its just about to finish but will be up on the BBC Radio2 player in a bit.

One of my favourite samplers was offered by HFNRR back in the '90s - a selection of music from the Ace label.  A very eclectic mix but just about every one a gem.  I ended up buying loads of Ace albums off the back of that sampler and it still lives on my iPod in the car.

Following on from Richards post above, this is a very good Ace sampler IMO.

Currently available from Amazon new £3.88p used 0.98p
