Posted by: matt podniesinski on 20 September 2012

I just received an e-mail alleging that the vinyl is finally arriving. Anybody else seen similar announcements?

MONO versions in 2013 apparently.

While some of the Hoffman forum members are skeptical, Fremer says on his website that an insider told him the 24/192 transfers will be used.  Who knows.

Posted on: 28 September 2012 by Steve J

As the excerpt from the Beatles Box Set bumf on Spin CDs website confirms the 24/192 transfers were used. Why oh why couldn't they just have cut from the original analogue masters?

The next step was to use the Neumann VMS80 cutting lathe at Abbey Road. Following thorough mechanical and electrical tests to ensure it was operating in peak condition, engineer Sean Magee cut the LPs in chronological release order. He used the original 24-bit remasters rather than the 16-bit versions that were required for CD production. It was also decided to use the remasters that had not undergone ‘limiting’ - a procedure to increase the sound level, which is deemed necessary for most current pop CDs.

I guess it will be of similar quality to the Love album. Good but not great.

The best deal I have seen is £274.99 + £8.00 postage from What Records.

Why could they have not reissued the earlier albums recorded for mono as mono and the latter albums in stereo as they were originally intended. I guess because they hope some completists with too much money would buy both sets.

I think I am going to take a breath, step back, and see what they turn out like before committing to a purchase.

The stereo box set is now available for pre-order from Amazon £299.99... I have placed my order.

$399.99 on Amazon on the west side of the big pond. Seems a little cheaper for some reason.

An interesting bit of info if you are lucky enough to have a copy of the re-release of  the Love Me Do single you've got a really rare item.

EMI have recalled all the stock because the version on the single is incorrect and under strict instructions from Apple the stock is to be destroyed. The single version as you probably know featured Ringo and the album version I believe featured Andy White with Ringo on Tambourine. Its the album version on the 7 inch !!!!

Apparty at the moment EMI have no plans to make the correct verion.

So to confirm, the new stereo pressings are taken from the 24 bit remasters not the analog remaster? Would it not be therefore better for me, having a ND5 XS, to get hold of a apple usb stick? Whats the point of having a digital recording pressed on vinyl? In my experience they sound poor in comparison to an analog to analog recording.

Personally I prefer the mono recordings (excluding Abbey Road and Let It Be). Never been able to gel with the extreme panning of instruments the the stereo mixes. I have the mono cd boxset. The new vinyl is going to be available individually I think, so I may do what I've done with the 2009 CD's-buy the last two studio records in vinyl stereo, then wait for the vinyl mono boxset.

That explains why my pre-order magically disappeared.

Placed my pre-order too! : )

£299 from Amazon.uk [includes free delivery option]

For 12 November 2012 release ~ [but we live in hope]

However...

Earlier today i played my vinyl copy of Rubber Soul which sounds bright, steely, obviously a digital sound and over compression etc...

Purchased 3 years ago from Amazon who still have it available for over 20 quid [if anyone here is daft enought to want one], ...think i paid about a £10 for it at the time, a reissue that looks recently made but quoted on Amazon as a November 1988 re-issue?

Totally crap quality and not much fun to listen to so imo it's not worth buying for anything even if the record sleeve does quote:

"This album has been direct metal mastered from a digitally re-mastered original tape to give the best possible sound quality"

So much for DMM, then.

Please someone tell me this new box-set will sound fab

+1 - placed my pre-order too

I have the originals of Rubber Soul onwards, but they were played rather a lot on dubious TTs in my youth ... hoping the new set does the trick.

What Records have just put up the individual LP's up for ordering at £16.99. It may make sense at that price to try one LP for SQ before spending out on the box set. Interesting that they are labelled as 2009 remasters.

Steve,

The 2009 remasters are what they are just pressed onto vinyl.

So they should sound just like the 2009 CDs but better on the old fruit box?

Stu.

Just seen a copy of the incorrectly released and then withdrawn 7" in a shop in Berwick St, London, for sale at £75!!!

I managed to get a copy for less than £5 before it was withdrawn and the correct version arrived today as well.

CDs are 16-bit, the LPs are mastered from 24-bit.

What Records.

Posted on: 08 November 2012 by Steve J

Just spoke to Tim at What Records who had just finished unloading the palettes of box sets. They weigh 11.5kg each! He's starting to send them out.

Unfortunately for me the individual albums won't be in until next week but he has a box set if I like the quality of the one I've ordered.

Steve,

The 11.5kg was one of the reasons  i ordered from amazon just incase it needs to go back for any reason.

That's a very sensible idea Stu but at more than £20 cheaper the return postage is more than covered if buying from What Records.
