Posted by: matt podniesinski on 20 September 2012

I just received an e-mail alleging that the vinyl is finally arriving. Anybody else seen similar announcements?

In the end I had to bite the bullet - picked up the box from my nearby record store this morning (quite heavy the box is so fortunately I had to carry it only few hundred meters). I have only tried a couple of LPs so far but I can already say that at least these are better than the C-cassettes I had in 70's or the 80's re-issue vinyls I bought later.

Bah Humbug Pete. At least you have something to look forward to.

Enjoy.

Oh bugger it. I can't afford it but I've ordered it.

Should arrive in the next day or so.

Hi Stu,

You mean like this, great minds think alike  This is my small office setup -

To be honest when setting this place up I don't know where we would have been without Ikea.

Well if it is going to be good enough for you Steve how could I resist

Thanks for the reviews guys and excellent news that Amazon are packaging it well as I've had a few issues in the past buying vinyl from them.

Consider the box set ordered, just hope it arrives in time before Rega take the RP8 back that I'm borrowing for a magazine article on Friday, maybe I'll just have to keep the door locked until I've worked my way through all the albums, how exciting

Certainly do Steve. Box arrived safely today. A quick check to make sure there wasn't any Parcelfarce damage and quickly repacked ready for Santa. So I'll have to follow this thread and see what the consensus on SQ is. I have them all on CD, but have no CDP these days. I did enjoy the remasters on CD when I had the CDS3. Peter

Good suggestion Joe, but my wife has agreed to sit and listen to every album with me over the Holiday. Will be well worth the wait. Pete

Set aside your "least favorite" LP and promise not to open that one until the 25th  .  Meanwhile, enjoy the 13 others.

Hi Peter.

My box also arrived today I will also have to wait until Christmas to open it. So I will join you on the thIs thread. My partner has just said that delayed gratification is good for the soul, not sure about that when it comes to the Beatles.

Regards  Graham.

Peter/Graham,

I'm hoping my box set arrives whilst my wife is out otherwise I may be in the same boat. I also have Jethro Tull 'TAAB', Neil Young 'Psychedelic Pill' and Led Zep 'Celebration' to come so maybe I can use these as 'sacrificial lambs'. God it's hard being a vinyl junkie.

I trust you are now fully recovered now Pete.

Keep well both of you.

Steve

The Packaging...

The box-set is in a cardboard box, which is placed inside a close fitting cardboard box that has polyfoam spacers to hold it safely in the middle of an even stronger outer-box [with the red Fragile sticker on]...

...and then Amazon put this in one of their boxes with paper.

Could have a game of pass the pacel?

Good photo... the same as my parcel.

Excellent packaging by Amazon...... have kept the inner box with the red sticker on ... consigned to the loft!

I just mentioned to my girlfriend that I was thinking of ordering the box set. She was fairly adamant that I not order it just now. I wonder what I will be getting Saturday for my birthday.

One can hope.  The LPs are like frosting on the cake...

I purchased a remastered Beatles for Sale to see how it sounded compared to a copy I have from the NZ Blue box; presumably it’s the NZ equivalent of BC13. The remastered copy has a bigger fuller sound with slightly more Bass, certainly not over blown though. It certainly sounds good however it lacks the intimacy of the Blue copy. Originally I had the Box set pre ordered from Amazon in the US but after hearing a couple of complaints about noisy pressings I cancelled the order & placed another order with Amazon in the UK. Supposedly the UK copies are pressed in Europe with better QC than the US pressings. Looking forward to the Box arriving. Cheers

Thanks for that report, Reynolds.  I was wondering about that same quality issue.  I remember from my youth that import vinyl always sounded better than the stuff put out here by Capitol.  I've held off ordering to hear what people in the US think.  The European box set is definitely more expensive, but might be worth the additional cost.

It would be nice to know for sure where the sets are pressed.

I think they are being pressed in California and I can't remember the name of the European plant but it has a great reputation. If you go to the Steve Hoffman Forum there is more information there. It's costing me another $80 extra to get the set from Europe rather than the US so your correct about the price difference. Cheers Allan

I just checked the price on Amazon UK.  Although price shown is 299.99 GBP, once you put the box set in your cart and start the order, it goes to 249.99.  Shipping is only about 3.00 to US address.  Total in USD is $417.  The set is selling here for $320, so an extra $100 to get the UK set. The question is whether there is actually a difference in quality between the sets.

Maybe someone here can do a comparison???

Sorry Allen, I've been calling you Reynolds.

Do you think the "lack of intimacy"  you heard could be due to the fact that the remasters are from digital back to analog, whereas the NZ copies are all analog?  Maybe not so much a SQ issue?  Perhaps even vinyl can't cure the digital chill.

Also, what is BC13?  Sounds more like a movie rating.  Thanks.

Hi Joerand, Yes I think that the fact that the remasters are from a digital source is the issue. BC13 refers to The Beatles collection, A box set of all of the UK released Beatles LP's. The BC13 box set was first released in 1978 (I think) and was being sold up until the mid late 80's. The BC13 version of Beatles for Sale sounded slightly more life like IMHO whereas the Remaster had a bigger sound stage. I did not bother raising the VTA of the tone arm before playing the remastered version. I don't know if it could make an appreciable difference but the remastered vinyl is quite a bit thicker than the BC13 vinyl. Allan

Allan, and hopefully I now have your name correct with both A's  .  Thanks for your observations.  Monday was Veterans Day in the US, so delivery date was a day later here.  I expect more feedback from my shores soon.  Cheers.

You guys seem to get your boxes cheaply. Here it costs 449,90€ (~ £360 / $570). I know, I know  I could have ordered it also on line but I like to support the local music store (my regular saturday morning activities includes the browsing through their vinyl collection).

Someone just put me onto Juno Records, never used them myself but they are doing the Box Set for £266 which seems like a bargain, I'm amazed it is being discounted to be honest, I wouldn't have thought being that it is limited numbers there would have been no need to discount, anyone used Juno before?
