nStream iOS 6 compatibility issues?

Posted by: RexManning on 20 September 2012

Since I updated iPhone (4Gs) and iPad (3) to iOS 6 this wednesday, nStream is behaving strangely.

iPad;

- Is the most serious. choosing an artist, then an album shows empty songs. This happens more than often. Strangely enough, when I go to folder view and select the album folder, all is fine.

- Album cover art is behaving strangely by sometimes not showing cover art anymore. It almost seems that this and the previous problem are linked. As I have the feeling that when this happens, the previous problem also occurs.

iPhone;

- When in album info and while reading, I get kicked back to the now playing screen. This happens inconsistently, sometimes a lot of times, sometimes I can read the whole thing.

Anyone else has this same issues, or is this already acknowledged by our friends at Naim?

For now...I'll play folderview..

Thanks, Rex

This forum has an iOS6 compatibility issue - having to click the links twice on an iPad... Just like the old days when Hoopla first took over.

Have you emailed Naim support as well?

Posted on: 20 September 2012 by RexManning

No. Doesn't Naim monitor this forum 24/7?

I thought to first come here and see if anyone else experiences the same thing.

But one would need a Naim streamer for that right Dave?

I must admit reading about the ios6 issues with maps and removal of YouTube etc, which I use a lot as an amateur musician  I was holding out on  updating the OS. This thread has definitely confirmed that  decision. I'll keep with ios5 until Apple resolve the bugs.

Regrettably it appears Apple is following the path that MS took 10 years ago with issue ridden operating system updates. The good news MS did improve significantly here, so I am sure Apple will improve over time...

Lesson: hold back on new Apple software until issues ironed out.

iOS6 is a bit of a mixed bag... Maps render faster, but the satellite images are not as good and street view was far more useful than the 3D flyover gimmick. The email enhancements seem a step in the right direction.

I've updated an iPad 2 and a latest generation model and don't have these issues (apart from the link issue in Hoopla)

I wonder if the issue is specific to certain UPNP servers, I'm using Asset.

n-Stream is working absolutely fine on both my iPad and iPhone since upgrading to iOS 6 yesterday. Have had minor issues with artwork ever since upgrading to the new nStream though. Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling n-Stream and see if that fixes it.

ios6 has worked perfectly with nStream with me.

No issues at all.

As to the Maps issue - Google Maps is still accessible via Safari.

Apple has merely removed it as a pre-install.

Wish they'd do the same with Stocks, Compass and Newsstand!

Posted on: 21 September 2012 by RexManning

Thanks for the replies. I re-installed nStream. To no effect. Still very unstable with the same issues. Maybe the troubles with Naim vs upnp from Synology has increased with ios6?

Posted on: 21 September 2012 by Simon-in-Suffolk

ok - so it appears nstream is ok with ios6 for most? good news. It is just maps which is more an issue for my iphone 4S and the bundled YouTube for which there is a workaround.

I will agree that I wish it was possible to "bury" the pre-installed stuff that you don't use...

Otherwise though I'm not having any issues so far. Looking forward to seeing it on my '5 when it arrives.

Let us know how the iPhone 5 is when it arrives!

All seems fine to me using iphone 3gs and iPad 3.

Despite a few troubles early on, the new versions of n stream are working well now on both ipad and iphone, and ios6 appears not to have affected anything.

My iPhone 5 has arrived Phil... great bit of kit... If you could chivvy along the guys in production, I'll be able to test it out with my new NDS

Gottit ... just waiting for my old phone to "drop" and the new one to pick up.

Backed up old iPhone 3GS and just restored that backup to the new phone - I know the Android fans will sneer a derisory sneer at a supposedly "techie" person like me but really guys, after a day at work sorting out peoples NASs and tagging on files that have nothing to do with us and so on the last thing I want to do is battle with my phone!

Have to say that I like it - I have a 4S as my work phone and in that way I manage to get around only being able to "upgrade" every 2 years. The taller screen fills the front panel so much better than on the 4S.

Other than that - just waiting for it to come "online" and have a play...

Feels sexy though.

Simon there is a new YouTube app on the App Store.  You can download it right now. This was a coordinated effort of Apple removing their app and Google providing their own.

Phil if there is an app that you can't delete, you can certainly make a folder called "junk" and put all of the pre-installed stuff you don't want into that folder, and keep it on the last page of your phone's desktop.  That's an effective burial as far as I'm concerned

Yeah - that's what I do now but it irks me  as sometimes maybe I can be the very slightest bit anal about stuff...

...put it this way you should see how tidy my movies and music collection is ... for example there's no mix of (CDS) / [CD Single] / [Single] etc.., everything is consistent (CD Single), all the multi disc sets are [CD n], all "A's" and "The's" are "<name>, A" or "<name>, The" and yes ... all my CDs are lined up straight in their case, all the cases are polished so they feel smooth to the touch when you take then out of the rack and all my unused network cables are neatly coiled with no kinks in them at all.

Can I hire you to come and do my cable dressing?   I'm pretty much that way with my digital music; I spend too many hours with Tag "fixing" the tags!

How widespread is this problem? Has anyone with a Synology NAS updated to iOS 6 without encountering this issue.

I have a 212j and am particularly reluctant to upgrade if this is a general problem. I've just spent 3 weeks with the Synology help desk resolving a problem which turned out to be the incompatibility of  Synology Assistant with recent versions (August 2012) of Safari. If you edited the Media Server DMA custom menu style, then the media server stopped working. The work-around is to use Firefox.

I've now managed, with some effort, to get back to DSM 3.2 and everything (including transcoding of hi-res files) is working sweetly and the latest nStream is running without any of the glitches reported elsewhere.

Phil,

I think I'm the same as you when it comes to consistency. Sounds very familiar!

Why not introduce an " ignore prefixes when sorting by artist" option in the next software release for the servers??

BTW: do you sort your albums "firstname lastname" or " lastname, firstname"?

Regards,

Michel

Brilliant post

... I find my Sandy Denny collection difficult as she was in The Bunch, Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, Strawbs and solo. So in the CD rack she is scattered around. So I welcome a way to just specify an artist and have all the tracks she is on appear

I run nStream under iOS6 to control music for playing through my UQ and it works fine for me.

All the best, Guy

iOS6 was disastrous for me in terms of wifi capability- went from a perfectly functioning iPad 2/iPhone 4 to a Pad2/Phone 4 with no 'i' in sight until days went by and I had, along with thousands of other users (judging by Apple's support forums and all the news coverage) kind of worked out a few fixes. It's mostly sorted now, but still a little flakey compared to before. I'd urge caution with this particular iOS upgrade if you're relying on it for anything, including streaming control- maybe wait for the next release...

Personal experience with iOS 6 has been good.  Upgraded the day it came out, and n-Serve and n-Stream both work fine on the iPad 2, iPad 3 and 4th gen iPod touches..  Am using Synology 212 as back-end to my US-SSD, and have had no issues,

Only issue I currently have is disc hibernation no longer functions on the NAS, though this is not due to iOS 6.

As others on his thread have commented, I have buried the new maps program, and have a shortcut on the desktop to Google maps on Safari.  Hear that there's a dedicated google maps app in the pipeline.......

George.

James - sorry to hear that - I waited a few weeks before upgrading, but when I did, it just worked - I did update and reinstall a few apps. I agree that you should not use a device you depend on to be the first on the block to try out the new all singing and dancing software.

The new maps problem is not an iOS6 problem per se ... just a very poor app from Apple, which is something of a blot on its copybook ... oh and bring back HyperCard

Did you update to IOS 6. If so any issues. My NAS setup is similar.

As a test, I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 yesterday. So far, it is not exhibiting any of the problems reported by the op. Nobody else has reported problems with nStream/iOS 6 so maybe it's limited to the op's system.

Nevertheless, I'm planning to hold off updating the iPad 2 until next month. Hopefully I will get the chance to speak with the Naim Software Manager - Trevor Wilson - at the Tom Tom Audio event, to see if he is aware of any problems. I guess I'll have to upgrade eventually as I'm already finding some apps that will only run in iOS 6.

Let me know the result if you decide to take the plunge yourself.
