SuperUniti sound quality
Posted by: RvanderHolst on 25 September 2012
Dear all, i was wondering about the quality of sound inputs in the SuperUniti. I'm getting a SuperUniti this week, and still struggling to find out what to do with streaming.
How would you rate the quality of sound inputs from:
1. Apple TV connected to optical in.
2. USB stick (with either mp3s or 24/96 files) in front panel USB in
3. Ipod Touch / iPad in front panel USB in
4. Streaming from NAS or external HDD
Or does it even matter?
The last line is the important one. It doesn't matter - enjoy the music !
If you're not streaming at the moment, then take your time and research it at you leisure. I wasn't sure about streaming, but I actually bought the Superuniti because I knew it was still great with other sources. Even when I got round to ripping and storing my CD's using a Voretexbox, I thought I would still be playing CD's a lot. However, I was wrong - most of my use of the Superuniti is now streaming from the Vortexbox. Other uses are internet radio and some sound from the Tv or music DVD's
Dear Jobseeker,
Thanks for the reply. I was very happy with the NAIT 5i and the streaming of spotify or apple remote to acces my itunes library stored at an external HDD. I guess with the superuniti i am stepping up in terms of DAC and in terms of amplifier. Everything i do will sound better i think anyways.
But the streaming straight into the superuniti cancels out the use of other products.... (like apple tv or the use of a mac.
you think that does not matter at all in terms of quality?
In terms of quality? I bet the ranking is 2-4-1-3, best to worst.
I let SU owners to comment and elaborate.
I think that what may matter more is the quality of the music files. If you were listening to lossy mp3 or aac files in the past, you will likely notice a big difference with lossless files.
I have been listening mostly to 44.1 kHz / 192 kbps files, but thinking of starting to build a new library with 24 / 96 or even 24 / 192 files. but then buying or downloading these files newly, for only the artists i consider it worthwhile for.
have already ripped my cd's in itunes, don't really wanna go through that effort again.... ripping 600 cd's is mighty time consuming.
i am really hoping for increased listening experience with the SU.
And I think you'll enjoy it. I agree with matpip's likely order and Bart's point - the original quality will usually outweigh the batting order of inputs.
thanks for all the replies,
i have not sorted out the upnp bit. I have an apple aiport extreme which does not support upnp, so i need to figure out how to get a has installed and in which way i should do that... no idea yet. solution will be to first start playing from a usb stick for my high res files and use apple tv for my itunes library...
any tips on the nas or upnp with airport extreme?
I've not tried 2, but 4, 3, 1 best to worst in my experience with a Uniti. With 4 being way better than 1.
Agree with other suggestions that you should enjoy listening to the music and figure out how you want to listen to your music.
If you want best SQ and your CD rips are currently 192kbps, then you will probably find re-ripping to uncompressed WAV, FLAC or similar is a big improvement. Try it on a few CDs and see if you think it's worth the aggro.
Interesting! What might be the reason why iPod-into-usb (2) seems to give poorer quality than usb-stick (3)? Aren't both signals reclocked in the SU anyway?
S.
i guess this depends on the quality of the music files.
I don't think ipod can handle 24 / 96 or even 24 /192 files.
back again to the view: quality in, quality out.
I will try to rip some of my cd's to lossless files and see what the difference is when i play these files back to back so i can hear the difference.

I too find CD-quality files sound better via a USB stick than from an iPod. I've no idea why - they should be the same. Or it might just be subjective on my part.
And Rvander is right - the iPod cannot handle 24/96 files. Shame Apple don't update the Classic to allow this - but I don't think that model has much priority to the company any more despite still being in the line-up when most people predicted it wold be dropped.
