Free [computer] Music Library Management eBook

From the folks who make Bliss, which I find very useful:

http://www.blisshq.com/music-l...anagement-ebook.html

Did a quick read, seems pretty good. He provides one solution all the way through for ripping, tagging, storing and backup.

Agree totally. To start with, they need better computer audio support for their dealers....

naim dealers are many in uk, cant imagine that customers will pull their hair out. again thanks ,good document

A very good e-book, thanks mutterback. I agree that any one selling music streaming gear should know this stuff. They should be able to answer their customer questions and give better support for this growing area of music consumption.

Has anyone signed up for email updates with Bliss? I didn't.

Hi, I'm the writer of the ebook! Thanks for the encouraging feedback. Further ideas for a second edition are welcome!

Dan, just curious do you own any Naim gears? Thanks for the link as computer audio is a steep learning curve for me.

Hello Dan,

interesting what you say about the different ways in which albumart is stored, thanks! Just as you said, I lose the albumart on my Mac/iTunes library when I play some of these files via a USB stick on a naim streamer. Is the only way for albumart to show up then to copy the art into (supposedly each individual?) AIFF file, please? Or would co-locating do the trick, too with my USB-stick?

Can either (copy into, or colocating) be done within iTunes, or would I need another (mac) app for this, please?

Thanks,

Stefan

Stefan,

the files for which the Naim doesn't show the artwork when played from a USB stick obviously do not have the artwork embedded. It rather seems to be just stored in iTunes' cache, but not in the file itself.

In order to gain clarity on what your files REALY contain I strongly advise to use MP3TAG (as also depicted in Dan's ebook). iTunes is not adequate to administer a proper tagging scheme.

thanks dan, naim should look at it ,  thats the kind of support needed instead of uses forum to fix things

Indeed a very good job. Thank you! Now I can finally lean back and simply pass on your ebook, whenever I try to convey the basics of digital music managemnt to someone.

A follower coulb be on the technical elements of streaming, or digital playback in general. Most poeple still have no clue what streaming really is. What is a server, how do I access a library, how do I operate a network, do I need a network at all? Stuff like that.

Not sure Dan can plug his software directly here. But, for this exact issue - getting missing album art, and embedding it directly into the files - Bliss (his software) works like a dream. Not sure what file formats it works on. I use it on FLAC. Chunks through your whole library and lets you add missing art, even choose the best version.  MusicBrainz Picard (free) does this also, but I find it leaves chaos in its wake if you don't use it *very* carefully, which I don't have the patience to do.

Dan - you should pitch Naim to hire you to write a branded version of your book. I'll help. IMHO, their marketing department is asleep at the wheel of their Bently, not looking in their rear view mirror - choose your own metaphor.

I do not... I tend to find most general techniques for library management work with most players, but each players have nuances, e.g. constraints about album art, support (or not) for multi genres... and so on.

I don't know about the rules for the Naim software that you are using (what's your actual Naim product and interface you are using?) and understanding those rules are the key.

If art must be embedded, and you are using iTunes, the problem is probably that iTunes stores art in its own database. If you are on a Mac, this script can embed artwork from the database into the files: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/...s/ss.php?sp=embedart

Sure, although I wouldn't mind them just using it as-is. Minimum effort might be to add a link to the ebook in their FAQs... What sort of help did you have in mind?

No idea what's going wrong but every time I try to download the file my IE8 browser just sits there on 0% (Not responding)...

Eventually I just give up and have to kill the process.

Which file are you downloading, the PDF?

Maybe it's something to do with the way the file is sent - try clicking the "Download the PDF now!" link instead.

Or try this direct link: http://www.blisshq.com/downloa...management-ebook.pdf

Cheers Dan. That worked! No idea what was going on earlier, but I was using the Download link...weird.

All hardware gratefully received

Seriously, I have been in touch with Naim about this but only via info@ . It's maybe not the best route...

I thought I was downloading the pdf mentioned above but seem somehow to have downloaded and installed some bliss software instead.  It seems to be some kind of music library software and is not something that I need.  The program file has an uninstall function but it doesn't seem to work.  The program doesn't even appear in the list in my control panel so I can't remove it that way.  Suggestions?

Posted on: 04 October 2012 by Dan Gravell

Hi... There is a problem with uninstall on Windows Vista/7. To make it work, follow these instructions:

1) Open Windows (file) Explorer

2) Go to C:\Program files\bliss (or wherever bliss was installed to, might be C:\Program files (x86)\bliss

3) You should see an "Uninstaller" folder. Open that up

4) Right click on 'uninstaller.jar' and click 'Run as administrator'

The uninstaller should now run through...
