Beatles Mono Box Set query

Posted by: DrMark on 29 September 2012

I just received the above mentioned item that I ordered from Amazon (the actual Amazon and not a reseller or just "fulfilled by Amazon.")  With all the counterfeits out there, I wanted to know if there are any tell-tale signs I should look for to determine authenticity.  I want to make sure I got the real deal, and not some "Shanghai fugazy." (Or from any other geographic location for that matter.)

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Mark,

Are you asking about vinyl or CD? Apparently the  Vinyl mono set is coming out in the Spring of next year.

Sorry - I should have been more specific; the CDs.

The first and most easy thing to check is play a disc or two and see if they are Stereo?

Most snide mono sets are Stereo copies.

Second? are the cd inner sleeves card or poly?

When you open the box are the discs stacked in the right order?

The book is a give away just read it.You will notice spelling and photo mistakes.

The amazon site buyer reviews has most of the things to look out for on it by people that have got stung.

Hope you got the real thing.

Stu.

Thanks Stu -

They are definitely mono - I have played 5 of them already and the sound is the best I have heard for Beatles.  In fact, I think I might get rid of my stereo copies (or at least some of them; the early stuff) because they won't get played while this is around the house.

Each CD comes in a plastic envelope, and in the "album cover" is a rounded plastic bag (well - I guess poly - not sure by definition - it is cloudy like wax paper would be), as well as a paper inner sleeve that is a mock-up of the dust sleeve from the original album.  The discs were stacked in the correct chronological order.  Sounds like I need to get into the booklet and do some vetting there as well.

I did read some of the Amazon stuff and so far I push all the right buttons.  Art work looks professional and MMT has the booklet inside the album cover - I have yet to look at the White Album, but apparently the swag in there can be a tip off too.

Hearing about the scams from this forum as well as other places was why I said to hell with saving $20-50 and just got it direct from Amazon and not one of their sellers (I paid $134 USD)...but it appears that there are more fakes than real out there so I thought I would ask here, where there are generally reliable people who tend to be in the know on the music reproduction industry.

Some duff sets got sold by amazon, Not there sellers a while back according to the reviews.

So there must be a lot about.

This is what i meant by poly inner sleeve.

Yes Stu - that looks like the sleeves my CDs are in.

Another way to possibly (not 100%) tell is that the Help! & Rubber Soul CDs have both the mono and a never released stereo mix on the same disc - this was mentioned in the booklet, and as I am now listening to Help! - the second mix has started after the mono finished.

Again, not a foolproof method, but the kind of detail Chung Li might just miss in his zeal to get "product" out.
