UnitiQute and Neat Petite SX
Posted by: minnow on 02 October 2012
Hello I am about to take the plunge on a UnitiQute after much deliberation. Thinking about a pair of standmount speakers to match. I love small(ish) standmounts for their discrete profile but also for imaging precision and speed. I have my eye on Neat Petite SXs and wonder if the Qute has sufficient welly to drive or if I should be looking elsewhere. Room is about 20 feet wide by 30 feet, I sit about 20 feet from my speakers. I listen mainly to acoustic music, some rock and occasionally jazz.
Thoughts appreciated.

I ran a Qute in a 11' x 17' room with a pair of stand mounted monitors (Dynaudio Contour S1.4) that were 86 db sensitivity and 4 ohm. The Qute struggled at times with some music (like orchestral) but sounded good for the most part; however, I was sitting 7-8' away. In the end I switched to a more powerful amp and no longer have the Qute. I listen to acoustic music (jazz and classical).
Sitting 20' away in a 20' x 30' room is probably asking for too much from a UnitiQute with inefficient speakers.

Ignoring the Qute for a minute, your room is huge, and too big for Neats Petites- unless you move in closer and listen near-field.
You need to readjust your strategy.

thanks for your responses - will set my sights a bit higher or go for more efficient speaker.

You need a SuperUniti for that size of a room.

That's a really big room for 30 watts. Why don't you consider the 5i integrated amp and use the savings for a Mac mini which you can use to store/stream your music as well as Internet radio etc. The remote ap seems to have a much better interface than nStream

And bigger speakers. Unless you're sitting very near field.

Although 30W is not a huge amount for a space that size, selection of a suitable speaker and it will will work very nicely. Say a s/h pair of Naim Arivas or even Allaes will both sound brilliant on the end of a Qute. Both are sensitive and floor mounting. They will have a better scale reproduction than a pair of stand mounts too. It still amazes me what the lill' ole Qutie could do with my SL2's .
