Is Squeezebox no more?

Posted by: Staedtler on 03 October 2012

I was just checking the Logitech website and found no links to the SB Touch et al. and searching on the net I found this.

Has anybody else read this and felt a little bit put out, to say the least (says a Touch and Radio owner)?

Yep. it is the bitter truth.

THE streaming capacity in the market going out of business. It is like the invention of black powder. The Chinese had it centuries before it came to use in Europe. Squeezeboxes are miles ahead of all other streaming solution and it'll take yeras, if ever, to reach this level of user friendliness and performance.

Indeed very sad news! It was the SB3 which made me move away from CDP and embrace the brave new world of wireless streaming! I never looked back since! If the SB products were ahead of its time, why did they give it all up? They should have entrenched their lead with new and innovative products! I was hoping they could move to SSD and a wireless streamer that had no DAC but simply required a bespoke DAC.

I suppose it has been a thorn in their side, that people are still listening to locally stored music whithout the company having a grip on the user data. It is all going down the route of online services an facebook-like lucidity of the consumer.

Sad truth, unfortunately.

PinkHamster, although I hope you are wrong I think you are correct and have predicted the future quite accurately. Of course due to bandwidth limitations, most of the online streaming options just don't sound that great. It's all rather annoying.

Eventually music will be stored in "clouds" and/or people would be able to subscribe to music streaming services with hi res or at least lossless formats.

Frankly I do welcome that, as I would not need to find a safe place to store the NAS and maintain the library myself

Oh god no, that is a shame. I have a SB Touch and an SB Duet so rely on the squeezebox server being updated on a regular basis to access my music. I suppose this will hasten me down the path of acquiring a Unitiserve SSD.

Agree the SB products are simple and easy to use, really never had a any problems.

Well, I've decided to snap up one of the last remaining SB Touch's for my study to go with the SBT in the lounge and SB radio in the bedroom.  Amazing little devices - if I could afford it I would put one in every bedroom!

I think Logitech have said they intend to continue supporting the devices into the foreseeable future so I see no need to panic just yet, but it is a shame and madness considering how highly respected they are.

I'd love a naim streamer one day for the main hi-fi but the SB is ideal for those other rooms where you want good quality music but budget requires a modestly priced device.

What I'd love is for naim to buy the design rights and develop it further, enhance it and sell it as a cheap and cheerful solution but I guess that's not really their market sector (yet!)

With regard to operational stability, flexibility of use and speed of interface reaction the Squeezeboxes are in another market sector indeed!!
