Can I hide the 'featured topics'?

I find it quite unnerving to constantly have the Featured Topics on the screen. I really don't care to see them every time I reload the forum page. Is there any way to hide them?

what I wyould like to see is some PRUNING of the featured topics occasionally.

I find it fits in with the scenic mess that is this forum.
