Unitiserve hangs on startup

Posted by: StefanS on 07 October 2012

Just shut down my Unitiserve (HARD) by touching the Naim logo for a while. After it was completely down I unplugged the power cord and plugged it in a different socket (wanted to try something). I restarted it by switching the switch on the back of the unit from off to on again. After that it never came back to full functionality. The naim logo just keeps on blinking.

I tried a few different things. Off cource switching it off and on again. Leaving it for a while in on. Switching it off again an leaving it off for a while. Nothing helped.

It seems to be that just the UPNP Server is not starting because I can access the http-server (but just the front page with the naim logo-cd) and the file system of the Unitiserve (just using that to backup all the files via network). But I can't connect via the Desktop Client or via the streamer (NDS).

I did read the "Virus Unitiserve" post, but I have the feeling that this here is a different problem because it is starting up half way at least.

Did anyone of you experience something simular?

Of course I will get in contact with my dealer, but it is Sunday and maybe there is a quick fix for that thing.

Thanks a lot for any help, thoughts and advice in advance.

Guys,

As it turns out my issue was not a virus issue. Naim asked for my serve to be return for analysis. I had the same problem with my serve (3 times to be exact). I don't have the answers other than this is an HQ solution.

In the end, I gave up and have returned my Serve. I suspect, there is a software/hardware issue/conflict somewhere in the chain. Either way, too much of a headache for me personally. I read directly from the Unpn on my NAS drive.

I know this isn't the answer you want to hear.....Best of luck. Naim is supposed to get back to me with a diognosis.

...both of my previous "crashes" (where it was stuck in boot mode) occurred after a power outage.

So it appears I am not the only one this is happening to.

In the end i had to send it back to the dealer. Will post an update when i find out what was wrong.

I look forward to hearing what the problem is. I still have not heard anything about mine.

Scot,

We have got your unit back only a few days ago. So we have not got the time to analyse it. as it is now ours, no rush. Customers first...

But your unit was infected, at least the second time we got it, no doubt about that.

I understand, just curious as to what the final diagnosis is.

Thanks again, and when you have any further information that you can share (regarding that pre we discussed) please let me know (via email).

All the best,

Scot

Got an email from the dealer that they had to change the hard drive and they could not recover the music from the old hard drive!!!  It was only 5 months old and i still hadnt finished loading it with music so i hadn't got round to setting up a backup

So when i gt it back later this week i have to reload my cds again.

I'm very irritated and now i wish i hadn't spent almost 3000 euros on a server just because it says Naim on it!

Hi guys,

Only just read the thread above.

I do not have a uniti serve but do have an HDX. Just a thought.

If the hard drive has failed after power outages, then it's unreasonable to blame Naim kit.

I believe that they work in a similar way to normal computer drives, ie if you shut down the drive without closing it properly (as a result of a power outage) then the drive does not know where it is and cannot read the data.

If youhive in an area that is a risk of power outages, may be worth considering powering the unit through a UPS unit. These can be bought in the form of small extension blocks, but with battery back up built in to them.

I know this might not be ideal from a clean power point if view and impact on sound, but worth considering if you are at risk of drive dilute and music loss.

All the best

I use RoboCopy to back up my Music directory to at least four other file shares.

Example:   robocopy \\UnitiServeIPaddress\music E:\UnitiServeBkUp\music /MIR

Actually my 'NAS' is a Windows 7 virtual machine running on an HP server running the Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V role. [Stereo typical IT guy with a rack of computer in the basement.]

Have same error, US doesn't start up...logo blinks but no booting, hope that HD didn't crash.

Happens after a controlled shut- down!

In your opinion is the US SSD better ?

Posted on: 18 April 2013 by Bart

Alain in 18 months owning the UnitiServe I have not had problems. The SSD version is great if you want also a NAS to store the files. The hdd version is a more complete solution for me.
