advice on Naim Unitiqute

Posted by: mezza on 08 October 2012

im thinking of getting a Unitiqute to replace my squeezebox touch, at present i have the SBT in my living room with a Ethernet cable running upstairs in to a Netgear Ethernet 8 port switch along with my Netgear readynas duo v2 which then goes in to my Virgin superhub i control my music with an app on my Samsung phone, which works perfectly well, and there is no need to have my desktop on which by the way is also upstairs, can someone please tell me how or what i need to do when i get the Unitiqute, and advice would be great, thanks

Hello mezza

Although I don’t know about your SBT, it sounds as though you are pretty much ready to go. To get the best from the Qute you will need an FM aerial point to enable FM radio to be received; you may find that you are able to pick up a few DAB stations via this aerial as well, depending on your location/signal strength. I can pick up about 30 stations this way although I have no interest in DAB myself.

So, install your Qute, connect speakers and plug in your Ethernet and FM aerial (if you have one) and away you go.

On installing the Qute it is well worth reserving an IP address in your router to ensure that the Qute always has the same address on your network as recommended in the manual (you will read the manual won’t you?)      I would recommend that you do this for your NAS also if you have not already done so.

Regards

Peter

What format is your music in on your NAS?

Posted on: 08 October 2012 by rjstaines

Hi, you'll find the Qute is ahead of your SBT in SQ, but the challenge you have (aka problem) is that the Naim app for controlling the Qute isn't going to run on your phone (as far as I know).

I can thoroughly recommend either 1) the Naim remote control  OR 2) an i-pad to run n-stream.

Actually I think the four hundred smakeroos for an ipad to run n-stream is worth it, but others will disagree. I actuially started with an ipod (2nd hand eBay) to test the concept, but although it works (up to a point), you don't get the full nstream/Qute control experience without an ipad.

"Go for it" - as I think they sometimes say in Salisbury.

Hi Peter

i think my superhub auto sets a ip address so i think i have that covered i will think about an aerial for FM as i have used DAB and its ok but i think FM is better in terms of SQ at this point i would like to thank you and the other members for there quick and helpful advice and info thank you

Hi mezza

Re: setting IP address.

You are of course correct in that your router (superhub) will allocate an IP address to anything you connect to it, the problem is it can change that address as it is on ‘lease’ and the lease has to be renewed regularly; every day or week is typical. This is why it is recommended that you reserve a permanent address so that it will never change,

Could not agree more regarding FM and DAB, FM plays several hours a day here, would not be without it.

As to the server on your NAS I am pretty sure you have a very usable one already, assuming the firmware is up to date. I use a ReadyNAS_NVX, so not identical firmware but I think you have the same functions on your Duo V2. Go to the Services section and switch on UPnP server, it’s on the same page as the Logitech media server option I think.

Sorry, I don’t do wireless so can’t advise on that.

Regards

Peter

Hi Mezza

It sounds like you're pretty much ready to go.  Your chief issue is that your andriod phone won't run nStream - so you'll either have to find a second-hand iPod touch to use as a remote or investigate somthing like Bubble to control it.  This is mentioned on the nStream for Android thread.  I've only dabbled in streaming so far, but I'm having other issues with my NAS and that experimentation has halted for the moment.

I had a combination aerial put in which effectively does DAB and FM - seems to work well enough for me.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Gavin, thanks only just bought my phone mainly to control my SBT i will look into what you mentioned about a iPod and a combination aerial seems sensible to have one of those put up thanks again Gavin, regards Martin

Your Samsung will give you access to a multitude of free music players all of which will drive the Qute extremely well. The control protocol is standard, not Naim specific, so you don't have to run Naim's application any more than you have to use their speakers. Mighty fine all those may be, but the choice is yours.

For Android there are a handful of excellent players all of which work well with the Qute. Bubble iPnP is what I'm using at the moment. You can even use Linn's control application if you like - the latest build of Kinsky is getting better (or is it the latest Naim build which is getting better?), and it's open source, free and cross-platform. It'll run on Fanboi devices.

that would be great if i can control the Qute, im not into spending a lot of money on phones but bought a galaxy s2 (had a lg cookie) because of its screen size to control the SBT, so if the Bubble iPnP app works the same way thats a result, would i have to put anything on the NAS (at moment i have to have the logitch media server on as an add on) or do you have to put some sort of server on my pc,i got a Nas so that i would not need my pc on to listen to my music, but if i had to it would not be that much of a problem, thanks for your reply Phil, im always grateful for advice, kind regards

I too use Bubbleupnp as I have an Android tablet (which I much prefer to the iPad and is half the price). As the name suggests, it needs a upnp server on the NAS or PC but then so does nStream - it's a controller and needs something to control. Logitech Media Server works fine. It is excellent for streaming music from a hard drive but won't control the inputs or iradio like nStream would.

Hi Pev, i know this may sound stupid but where/how do i go about installing a upnp on my NAS?

Posted on: 15 October 2012 by Pev

Hi Mezza,

I don't use a NAS myself, I use a dedicated PC and back up onto a laptop and an external disc. Having said that, most NAS would come with a upnp server pre installed. You say you have to have Logitech Media Server as an add on - this would be fine. Look in your Readynas manual to check if you already have a upnp server. I have Foobar and Asset as well as LMS - all are fine. From posts on this forum I understand Twonky is often bundled with a NAS. Most upnp servers are free and are fairly similar when used via Bubble. Bubbleupnp is free to try and the full version is less than £5 as an app from Google Play. It is very easy to use - there is a button at the bottom of the screen labelled <Devices>. Click on this and it will show all upnp servers on your network as well as your playback device (Unitiqute in your case). Click on your preference and away you go.

Good luck and enjoy the Qute!

It sounds as though you need to flush or refresh the cache in your app. I don’t use it so can’t tell you how to do this. Perhaps you could take a look and work out how.

Hi Mezza

glad to hear you are up and running in spite of artwork issues. I use a PC rather than a NAS so my experience may not be directly relevant but a couple of things you could try are: uninstall and then reinstall the upnp server - this should be an extreme version of refreshing the cache; or maybe try adding another upnp server on your NAS. I have 3 on my pc and I find Asset is best for me (others are Foobar and LMS). Bubble will find them all if they are running and you can swap between them. Artwork issues are usually down to the upnp server rather than the control point (Bubble) or the streamer (Qute). I think quite few people on here use Netgear readynas so maybe someone will chime in with upnp server recommendations.

good luck and enjoy the music
