Artist you know you should like but don’t.

Posted by: Quad 33 on 15 October 2012

I have albums in my collection by artist I should like and tried to like but just don’t. For instance I have tried to like Kate Bush, Milles Davis, Paul Weller and Steve Wonder over the years but just find it difficult. Is it just me? Or have you also tried and failed with certain artist, no matter how many times you have given them a go.

Regards Graham.

Rush.  Tom Waits.  I will omit Porcupine Tree as only Brits are "supposed" to like them

Now as to Frank S. -- it's mostly just his live stuff I enjoy.  I enjoy the energy of the performance in addition to his great voice.  I think that he was a fantastic live performer.  If I had a time machine I'd go back and see him at the Sands in Las Vegas with the Count Basie Orchestra.  That disc is one of my favorites.

Interesting .... thanks for answering my post Bart - perhaps you have to be there to get him.

Bowie, Mozart, Jack White should all be right up my street but somehow never connect unlike Hammill, Haydn, and Zappa to give a bit of context though Zappa took some time to sink in.

How bizarre - the first three micturate over the others IMO!

I've never been a big fan of Elvis and the early rock & rollers.

Of course. Throbbing Gristle, mostly.

You mostly post pictures of over priced un-opened box sets that cost more than your Deck/arm and re=tipped cartridge.

I'm too young to have seen him in that era, but I think that he was a masterful PERFORMER.  I focus more on "performer" than "singer," really.

Sacrilege I realise around these parts but The Beatles are up there for me. I don't mind some of their stuff  but I can't stand all the fawning that goes on whenever they are mentioned.

I'm with Guido on the whole brat pack thing and try as I might over the years I just find jazz a bit too ... dunno "grown up" ?

Now having said all that I'd be the first to admit I still like the rock bands I grew up with and I can't get too excited by new stuff but totally agree that seeing someone live makes a huge difference. I like the Stones but the prospect of remortgaging to see them one more time doesn't appeal either.

I do miss The Hamsters now ...

cheers

Nice pic!

I don't have a dog, but if I did it wouldn't like Zappa or Elvis. Or bl**** Nirvana, who for me are the most over-hyped band in history. I'm sure it would like both of the dogs above.

Continuing the theme of near-heretical dislikes of the established greats, I have always felt like an outsider on the subject of classical music. I sort of get Bach and Mozart, and I enjoy most opera in the classical/romantic vein up until about Korngold's Die Tote Stadt, but I often find myself staring at my watch during Beethoven, particularly the symphonies and piano concerto's and wondering when he'll get a bloomin' move on. Oh wait, here comes another recapitulation of the main theme, closely followed by another exposition - and with all the rhythmic shading of the keyboard being hit repeatedly with a damp clog. No grace, unlike Mozart.

Can I be cured?

I see there's a lot of the " I don't get/like Zappa". I'm sure if he were alive he'd be pulling his trowsers down to another record co executive and make records to please "the crowds". Thanks for NOT listening!

Still love you all...

In one of his last interviews, Frank said it didn't matter if he or his music were remembered

I can't understand why folk don't like Nirvana as this album is classic

Of course I can't stand that grunge band who stole their name, but I think everybody has forgotten that lot. There is only one true Nirvana

Oh did I mention I don't get Joy Division/New Order/Depeche Mode/Culture Club etc.,

Hard to differentiate between: "Good music, but I just can't dig it" versus "Very popular, but hate it".

In the first category for me: Porcupine Tree, Mumford & Sons, Fleetfoxes, Pink Floyd. Got the albums and when I ever decide to give them another try...they never last more than 30 seconds..sorry

"never last more than 30 seconds"

I'm sorry Rex but you seem to be suffering from premature audio gratification

I think any music derserves more than 30 seconds attention, Mariah Carey being an exception of course. Must dash, on my way to Leicester.

I often get quizical or questioning looks when i say i cant stand Queen, the first few notes of bohemian rhapsody make me want to set light to commemorative tea towels.   sounds like pantomime music at best to me,,

more recently Brit Pop..,, Blur , silly mockney accent that just grates. Elastica on the other hand  made a few great singles one good album and vanished,   brit pop at its best for me

recently ,, KIllers , Kaiser cheifs , singalong indie fill by numbers ..

Bauhaus on the other hand , what is not to like
