SU owners - demo requested please!

When i listen to RADIOIO's Vocal Jazz (station from Tampa Florida) through my SU I hear what can best be described as a 'wolf-whistling' (occasional high frequency disruptions) which is driving me up the wall! I love this particular iRadio station because it has quite a good repertoire of easy jazz vocal favourites (Diana Krall, et al).

Could I request for anyone out there to tune to this station and report back whether you hear this same phenomena? The other interent radio stations are just fine. I cannot understand why this station sounds this way? Please help!

I've got a NU only but the station here sounds fine (although the bitrate seems to be only 64kb/s). Sorry that I could not verify your findings. Hopefully it will be only a temporary problem for you.

Thanks very much Osprey! Yes, it's only 64 Kbps but it provides very good background music. Your findings are helpful in that it indicates the problem is not related to the station signals but lies elsewhere. I'm beginning to sense it might be my router that is the culprit.

Thanks for stimulating me to explore the internet radio on the SU beyond Radio Paradise, BBC R3 & 4.  As with Osprey the sound here is fine, as it was direct from my computer into my alternative study system.  I hope your wolf whistling is only a short term phenomenon!

I've just tried the station and it sounds ok here in Chiswick.

UnT...you mention Diana Krall...I hope you have the HD

Downloads from Linn.  SU...perb!

naimUnT: After finishing listening to the presidential debate here in the Colonies, I have listened to the station for half an hour, and I have heard nothing like what you describe--nothing/zip/nada.  Wierd, to say the least, that it happens only on one station.

That having been said, I must say that during the debate itself, I heard many "...high frequency disruptions."

Thanks for helping Forester! Yes, there are something like 10,000 iRadio stations out there which is just amazing and waiting for the listener to discover! Sure the sound cannot beat CD quality but the higher bit rate stations sound quite decent and provide good background music.

Hi Cal Jim, no I don't have the Linn HDs but Linn's 320 kbps is one of my fabourite station for sure. Is the HD a subscription based service?

Hi Russ, I'm afraid there does not seem to be any prospect of the 'wolf whistling' disappearing anytime soon. I did a little experiment and borrowed a Rega DAC (which seems to have garnered some rave reviews), with my SBT digital out into the Rega DAC and analog into the SU. It was a superb experience - same station (RadioIO Vocal Jazz) but there was not a trace of the weird phenomena which I experienced with the SU's iRadio. In fact, I was amazed with how good the SBT-Rega DAC sounded and decided to leave it playing for a bit (more to hear if the howl surreptitiously presented itself) and before long I was simply immersed with the music! Nait 5 owners who can't afford a Naim DAC should certainly shortlist the Rega DAC. It's about the most analog sounding DAC I have heard in a long time (the others which impressed me with a vinyl sound is the 20 year old Wadia x 32 and the LFD DAC3).

naimUnT: All I can say is that it gets curiouser and curiouser.  By the way, I looked at your profile and cannot figure out what the "SBT" is.

Squeezebox Touch. (Too many acronyms in this hobby Russ!)

HAGWE,  ("have a good weekend" . . . had to give you another acronym)

Bart: I am sitting here hitting myself in the forehead with the heel of my hand!  You are right about the number of acronymns, but I have used that one myself several times--since I was thinking about using the SBT as iRadio input to my whole-house system--until they discontinued it.  Since SQ is not all that big a deal, if I understand its replacement, I may use the analog out from that into my distribution unit.

UnT...there is no subscription at Linn.  You buy each selection

individually.

Jim: It sounds as if naimUnT was thinking you meant higher def than 320 on iradio.  I could be wrong and I'm sure he will correct me if that is wrong.  Which brings up again, a question I asked in one of my own threads: Is there on the horizon--or has there ever been any streaming radio available with a bit rate greater than 320?  My guess is that while any amount of bandwidth is theoretically possible, there would be a reluctance to release greater definition--otherwise folks would just listen to free radio and not buy the music!

Hi Cal Jim, indeed I was thinking along the lines of iRadio but I must checkout Linn'a downloads. Gosh, music downloads r proliferating. Wonder how much longer CD shops will be around! Russ, yes it does get more n more intriguing. The SBT is really very good for the money. I've never tried the analog out but I hear it has a decent enough DAC. I think 320 is the highest and stations like Avro and Linn are using that high rate. Sometimes I feel it can rival CD quality, at least to my ears.

So far, the only 320 s I have found are Linn Classical, Linn Jazz, and Radio Paradise.  I believe that AVRO Classic and AVRO Baroque are 256--certainly not very far behind.  There may be others that have eluded me.  In my own system, the stations mentioned, plus, I must say, a few which only run at 128-192 KB/sec not only rival most CD s, but surpass them.  I say again--on my system--because I am using the cheapest CDP known to mankind--a Wal Mart $39 USD special.    Don't get me wrong--the CDP and iRadio are way beyond anything I have ever owned and played before.

As I understand it, the Touch is no more--maybe a few left with dealers, but the handwriting seems to be on the wall.
