UnitiServe-SSD --> NDX

Posted by: Jonas Olofsson on 16 October 2012

Still trying to get a grip....

Whats the best sounding way to connect/install NDX and US-SSD?

Does both need an internet-connection (wired of course).

Any input is welcomed!

Both -> Switch -> Router (via Ethernet)

Should probably mention that Guy (Fawkes) and Simon (in Suffolk) also recommend some inexpensive ferite clamps on the Ethernet cable to kill off any RFI, so you might want to give this a try

Thank you! No DC1 between them both? Probably need a router with more connections... This Forum is...Fantastic! Ask a question and have at least one answer 10 min later! Thx!! //Jonas

No need for more router ports, a switch is preferable. Topology as described by Prubast keeps streaming audio away from the rest of the network traffic.

Ok, good to know cause its already full. Sorry for repeating myself over and over...no need for DC1?

Jonas, I think that you have two fundamentally different ways of connecting the UnitiServe to the NDX.  One is to use a DC1 cable, in which case you are using the uServe as a "player" and I believe simply using the NDX as a dac at that point.  If you do it this way, you need to use nServe to control playback by controlling the uServe.  The second option is to use an ethernet (network) connection, preferably thru a switch as others have said, in which case you are using the uServe as a "server" and the NDX as a player.  In this option you will control playback with nStream controlling the NDX.

I hope that this makes sense.

It would be interesting for you to compare the sound of each setup.  Most here would predict that Option 2 would sound better.

No, no need for DC1. Connection is via ethernet. DC1 would be for UnitiServe directly into DAC.

Everybody. Thx a LOT! You made my day. //Jonas

Am I being a bit dim here?  Don't you need a NAS to store your files on too?  The US-SSD doesn't have any (long-term) storage, does it.

Yes that's right, but not really relevant to the OP's question. The NAS in such a setup is merely a storage device, and the uServe functions as the UnPnP server.  The NDX does not need to "see" the NAS on the network.  At least that's the obvious way to me to set things up, letting a Naim server talk to a Naim player.
