What's Your Favourite Santana Album?

Posted by: GraemeH on 17 October 2012

Having a bit of a Santana glut whilst recovering from manflu and it's 'Caravanserai' that's hitting the spot.

Awaiting 'Lotus' imminently which may usurp the present incumbent if it's as good as I've read about.

What's yours?

Supernatural and Shaman of the later  albums. First eponymous album and Abraxas of the earlier ones. Caravanserai is one of my least favourites, a bit too jazzy from memory.

Another fav from the passed was Carlos and Buddy Miles Live.

Interesting - Supernatural I hate!.  'Welcome' on just now,,,,even 'jazzier' than 'Caravanserai'.....Like the earlier albums too.  3 being a particular stand-out I think......a very 'mood-specific' band.  G

Lotus. Never get tired of listening to them after all these years.  And I always listen to them in order and from beginning to end. Not many records achieve that sort of audio perfection and listening pleasure IMHO.

In addition to the three stand outs (Abraxas, III and Caravanseri) I also have a soft spot for his John Mclaughlin collaboration - Love Devotion Surrender. Oh and check out the Legacy edition of III for his live take on "In a silent way". Shows the segue to Caravanseri and LDS from the Latin-based stuff.

Caravanserai - sound tidied up but music still great. My absolute favourite is their filmed performance at Woodstock (ditto Joe Cocker).

Abraxas and Caravanseri for me.

His first three albums ( compulsory ) plus...

Amigo:

Festival:

Inner Secrets:

This is probably the weakest out of all those above but I just love the short tune called '"Life Is A Lady/Holiday' in this. I use it to test a system dynamics.

'Moonflower' arrived this morning.  Seems to me to strike the perfect balance this one!  Beautifully recorded first CD pressing too.  G

It was always Caranvaserai until I recently found out they'd nicked one of the key tracks note for note from Pharoah Saunders. Now not so sure.
