The Conker Thread

Really bad timing chaps, (as the season is almost over) but hey better late than never. I am currently engaged in attempting to introduce Conkers to Norway with limited success as they tend to consider it slightly aggressive.

Also, it probably doesn't help my cause when I approach small children in the street asking if they would like to play Conkers with me, even the liberal Norwagians want accept that behaviour.

Anyway for those that are unfamiliar with the game.......

Please, someone tell me they have been playing this year..........

Hi Jason, yes I played not too long ago, 46 years to be exact. I seem to remember owning several fivers. I was more fascinated however by the depth and beauty of the wood grain on the conkers, which I think has expressed itself in a lifelong passion for wood and wood finishing. Thanks for the link ; I now know how I want to finish my next pair of speakers, although peeling the conkers may take a little time.

Hi Jan, I am glad someone here is still playing Conkers......this is a very disapointing responce thus far.

I am assuming many Forum members have children, but perhaps they have also succumb to the incessant heath and safety regulations squeezing the life out of our society in many ways.

The last time I heard, in the UK,  Conkers were band in the school play ground due to the possibility of injury to said child, this is actauly more to do with the threat of being sued on the school by the parents rather than actual fear of harm to ones person.

As I understand you are in Canada right? How popular is Conkers in Canada????

as a health and safety professional, I would prefer to think that we are helping preserve health and enable many to live longer lives and retire with all of their body parts and functions intact. I've just seen too much occupational cancers, hearing losses, and injuries (all preventable BTW). I agree though that removing risk can remove a lot of fun. I think that we are natural risk takers and will always reintroduce some level of risk to rebalance certain safety measures. Do you follow the car in front more closely if you have ABS brakes ?

It's not popular, in fact it's virtually unknown

OK, that was a bit childish... I was really looking for a photo that showed the wood grain effect I referred to above. This would look superb on a pair of speakers.

Yep, a lovely Conker veneer, I'd go with that!

... would look good, but may induce an uncontrollable urge to smash one speaker against the other.

And with that, Jason, I think we can declare the Conker Thread officially dead, to be shelved next to Morris Dancing and Cheese Rolling.

Lol, its a poor turn out and not even any hecklers! Perhaps I missed the boat on this thread.

But rest assured I will be getting my Conkers out early next September and I expect a little more reaction from the forum...but I guess this lot have seen it all!

I don't think conckers are even allowed in UK schools any longer due to health and safety police, we won't be allowed to cross the sreet very soon without taking the correct risk assesment course!
