Music with Drums in the foreground

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 19 October 2012

Any recommendations. Looking for music like

Cannibals by Mark Knopfler

Paul Simon's boy in the bubble, first song from the ..saints .. album

Something that is relatively easy to play along with...

Generally fun music to listen to, with drums in the foreground...

"Birthday" by the Beatles seems like an obvious one to me.

Isn't "Boy in the Bubble" on Graceland?

With only drums in the foreground, Slagerij van Kampen

Undivided

Anything by Roy Orbison

Music in the foreground just about describes the genre of Northern Soul.

Definitely easy the play along with and dance too, but be careful.

Mango,

Most Steely Dan /Donald Fagen albums have drums upfront and are easy to follow with no fancy fills.

My fav over the last few years is this album.

It has lots going on percussion wise that i love and great fun to play along with.

Stu.

If you like rhythm you might want to try Sly & Robbie (below an example).

Yes. I meant in addition to that, the first song from rhythm of the saints: obvious child.

Skip the intro and you'll hear them there drums - it's Neu!

All Neu!'s music has drums at the forefront and is pretty good in to the bargain.

All My Colours (Zimbo) by Echo and the Bunnymen has very much foregrounded drums. There's a version with Burundi drummers if you need more drums.

Big (very big) drums: Birth of a Cyborg from the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack.

All on YouTube.

Moby Dick  is a good one to play along with hands and feet.

Also on youtube.

Right you are.  Since you mentioned it, I just had to listen to Rhythm of the Saints on this wet Saturday night.  Wonderful!  Soothing!  Much better than the Husky game.

Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones.  One of the most powerful RS songs.  The sparse arrangement of the tune during the intro & verse is what makes the drums nicely stand out.  Listen to the big, powerful tone from the Charlie Watts bass drum.  Rivals anything John Bonham was bringing.

Also, I could be wrong, but doesn't a lot of Peter Gabrielle songs have a very present drum, percussion mix?  "In Your Eyes"  would be a good example.
