Wine ratings....

0/10... Undrinkable poison (or corked) …a non-starter.

1/10... Horrible nasty tasting plonk. Best used for a sink waste cleaner.

2/10... Very poor effort, not enjoyable to drink but maybe used for cooking.

3/10... Grimace wine ...with too many concessions that leaves one wanting.

4/10... An okay wine with some virtues but far from good quality.

5/10... Good drinkable fair to middling wine but far from flawless.

6/10... Very good wine, drinkable. Would buy again at the right price.

7/10... Excellent wine, very drinkable and enjoyable.

8/10... Excellent plus wine, highly enjoyable, class!

9/10... A special wine with the most fantastic taste.

Ten!.. Perfection!

Just uncorked an Angel's Flight : )

"Rich, ripe Zinfandel from California packed full with delicious raspberry, strawberry and blackberry fruit flavours. Soft tannins on the palate compliment the classic varietal character."

California
Red - medium bodied
14.0%
100% Zinfandel

My previous bottles of this have been nice and this isn't bad either, this the has hints of liquorice…, it really needs to be decanted and goes without saying - room temp… and given some time (2 hours) to smooth out an otherwise cold hairy tongue after taste, can be very grizzly if opened up too cold [I know… I tried] Nice colour and good body but more than slightly strong.

When warmed up proper is very happy face drinkable though : )

score = 6/10

Was in Calais yesterday. Lidl have opened a large new store about a mile from the Shuttle terminal and about 2 minutes drive from the motorway. Some blinding deals to be had on both their everyday and more upmarket wines. Amongst other wines i bought 60 bottles(all they had on the shelf) of Montepulciano 13% at Euros 1.79 a bottle(appx £1.50).Just had a bottle for lunch and have to say for everyday drinking(and we drink every day) its bang on.

If you like Zinfandel - and not everyone does - then this is rather good and excellent value at under £7 a bottle from Majestic right now.

Majestic always seem to get a great deal on Ravensood wines from time to time.  I recall a few years back they had the Vintner's Blend Zinfandel at £2.99 a bottle from their Calais shop.  At that price I bought as much as I could fit in an already loaded car and even went back for more a week later, but it was long gone. Astonishingly good wine for the money...

And while you're in Majestic, check this one out as well.  Rather lovely "Bordeaux" blend and again, excellent value.

The Ravenswood logo is the second most popular tattoo design* in the States (they told me).

*First, rather depressingly, is the Nike 'swoosh'

Just been doing a few sums regarding how much boss lady and i spend on wine each month and its a few bob. I think on average we must get thru at least 12 bottles a week !!

from our home its just over an hours drive to Dover and a day trip to Aldi/Lidl in Calais + a spot of lunch is easy. FILL the car up and i reckon i could save up to £500 on each trip.

You need to live in the South East to make this viable. Was just wondering if any of you posters are already doing this ?

This is concentrated stuff, made from old vines. The dynamic Bogle team has produced a wine in which mouth- filling blueberry and blackberry fruit gives way to black pepper and chocolate mid-palate then on to a spicy finish.

WHAT CONTEMPTIBLE SCOUNDREL

STOLE THE CORK FROM MY LUNCH

W.C. FIELDS

Quote above printed around the side of the cork.

Does that mean Mr Fields liked wine so much he eat the cork with lunch?

One way to get some fibre into your diet i suppose.

This is my third bottle of this Zinfandel graped Bogle [from box of 6 purchased].

The first bottle opened last year was very nice for an interesting wine but not a good choice for an apéritif.

A month later the second tasted to strange for my taste. This is very strong and potent octane rated wine, full bodied with a range of odd tastes that i have to be in the mood for. I don't think the odd flavour justifies the expense imho, but this 3rd bottle tastes a whole lot smoother and nicer than the second but still with very strange flavour and even more odd back-taste : /

I will leave my remaining 3 bottles to mature in the cellar for a few years…

I seem to prefer smooth table reds of 12% ~ 12.5%

Probably cos i enjoy a glass or 2 while preparing and cooking lunch.

After i've eaten lunch drinking alcohol suddenly tastes yuk to me!

So it's coffee and a slice for afters : )

Not a wine connoisseur myself but my wife and I had a bottle of Shiraz Bin 555 last night. Both of us today feel quite poorly, stuffed up sinuses etc. The food we had was OK only the wine was different, anyone had this experience with Bin 555?
