555PS or Supercap DS?

Posted by: CDI on 25 October 2012

I have an NDS now and am using the xps2 that previously powered the CDS3. I was planning to finally replace my last piece of olive kit - a serviced (3 yrs ago) Supercap but wondered if it would be better to spend the cash on a 555PS DR for the NDS?

cant afford both and a lot of kit to borrow from dealer, has anyone done similar comparison? Using a 252 preamp

I run a similar set up - NDS, 555PS DR, 252, Non DR Black Supercap, 300, S-600's. as I understand it, there's not much between a serviced Olive Supercap and the Black.

From my experience the NDS needs a 555PS DR to show what it's capable of - which is a lot! I suspect the 555 is going to add more for you right now than swapping out the Supercap.

But Dave, There is a bigger difference now if you buy a new Supercap, it will be DR'd......

..and it will be DR'd in a few months time too.  Give the NDS what it deserves right away if you've got the funds - a 555PS. You'll enjoy a very high level of SQ right from the off.

Both the 555PS and the Supercap new will have DR technology. From a source first point of view it would appear to make more sense buying the 555PS but, the Supercap will be powering the preamp and in the DR demos I've had one of the biggest improvements I've heard has been when the preamp supply has been DR'd. There are more of the regulators in the SC than the 555PS so it kind of makes sense. The best advise I can give is to ask your dealer for a demo of both and make up your mind from there. I have just had my 552PS and SC (for a Superline) back after being upgraded and it's made a massive difference.

Good Luck.

Hi yes the NDS really needs a dual burndy feed from at least a single 555PS to deliver its talent. Try and listen to a used non DR and DR version however as the sonic presentation from the NDS is slightly different between the two and you might prefer one over the other.

Thanks for the replies - it may be difficult to get my dealer to obtain 2 555PS's (onr on DR one DR) for demo though

Can you expand on the significant difference with the NDS?

Hi the 555PS on the NDS and NDAC gives it authority and bite in a natural way. The XPS2 gives a cuddlier but not quite as insightful sound.

On the CDS3 I preferred the XPS2, however with the DACs (NDAC and NDS) the 555PS gives a great natural sounding performance.
