unitiqute and n stream
Posted by: mezza on 27 October 2012
Hi, i hope someone can help me out, i have a unitiqute latest firmware 3.16 with the n stream app 3.1 on my ipod touch 4th gen my music files are flac stored on a netgear readynas duo v2 and ethernet up,problem being when i open the n stream app on the touch it says cannot find device so i have entered the ip address of the unitiqute and it connects to my nas and all is ok a part from if i uncheck the upnp compatibility (on the n stream app) it puts up no server found so i have to turn on the compatibility upnp but then i can not create playlists i hope i have explained this right, thanks in advance
upnp compatability doesn't support using playlists or queuing.
I've found that some NAS's don't work well with n-stream, don't know if it's a upnp issue on the NAS or n-stream at fault.
I got round it by building a vortexbox server and n-stream works very well with this and doesn't need compatability mode to be on so I can use playlists and queues which is a great feture.
The NAS's i've found that don't work with n-stream are:
QNAP running twonky.
QNAP running squeezebox server (works intermittently but more not than does)
Seagate blackarmor running upnp media server.
upnp compatability doesn't support using playlists or queuing.

Thanks for your reply, regarding the Vortebox server is that fairly easy to do? do you install it on the Nas?
i would really like to have use of the playlist features on the N stream app the layout is better also, when i change the compatability on/off my Nas shows up and works breifly then states no server, any help would be great thanks
Vortexbox is a Linux-based program which, when loaded onto a computer, turns the entire computer into a ripper and NAS server. Have a look at www.vortexbox.org

sorry for asking as im new to this so will i then have to put all my music files on the computer that is now the Vortexbox or can they be left on my netgear nas?
I'm not an expert on this kind of thing and don't know which NAS / server software work best. I had a heck of a learning curve to get to where I am (Vortexbox seving to Superuniti) so I understand your issues. The 'Qute, working with NStream should find all the servers you have, however many that ends up being. You would simply pick the one you wanted from the list of servers presented to you on the NStream screen. However, if Nstream won't do certain things you want it to do when communicating with that NAS, then that problem will remain in relation to any files stored on it.
Therefore, the bottom line is that if your current choice of NAS / Server software really cannot be made to do what you want with the 'Qute and NStream, you would have to change it to one that does. It may be that someone with more expertise may be able to tell you how to cure the problem using your current set-up, of course. I know that some incompatibilities like this do arise from time to time. Some can be cured if you know what you're doing - some cannot.
Yes, the vortexbox is able to automatically rip CD's as soon as they are inserted and you can also upload music to it. If your music is already in flac or wav you can just copy and paste them into a shared folder on the vortexbox and tell it to scan for new files and add them to the library. You can also add a feature that will automatically fetch album cover art.
I just purchased a mini computer off ebay and added a dvd drive and 2 TB hard disk then installed vortexbox, all very easy and the install is self explanatory.
You can buy ready built vortexbox appliances off their website and I've seen some on ebay at around £300 for 2 TB.
i use a ipod touch 4Th gen with n stream app with compatibility off it picks up my sons laptop but not my nas, i had a netgear readynas duo v2 but changed it to a synology ds211j and with compatibility off the n stream will not pick up either of the nas only the laptop, i put compatibility mode on it finds the nas,no massive prob but i would like to use the n stream with the compatibility mode off any one got any more ideas
Hi Mezza - on your readyNAS Duo V2 go to Configure, then click on the music share (if more than one, do one at a time), then scroll down to the bottom of the right hand settings window until you see 'ReadyDLNA Service' and slide this to show 'On'.
The ReadyNAS will then serve music in this (these) folder(s) to your UQ, controlled by n-stream. N-stream should have 'compatibility' switched OFF. You get your music and your playlists !! I'm doing it as I write - I usually use an HDX as my server but I just configured my ReadyNAS Duo V2 and switched from HDX to ReadyNAS on my n-stream app controlling my UQ.
(...simples... ????)

Though I prefer working with my Assett upnp, I have a QNAP219 with Twonky 7 running, which work perfectly with nStream

Mezza, just to confirm, my setup is identical to yours except I have 3.2 n-stream on my ipod touch.
I'm listening to Everybody Hurts (helping Haiti) on my UQ, served from my ReadyNAS Duo v2 & controlled from a playlist. Compatibility in n-stream is OFF.
It works !! (don't let anyone tell you otherwise - you have a great setup)

Hello Roger,
i did what you said but the only server that comes up on the iopd touch when compatibility mode is off on the n stream app is my sons laptop (Windows 7) my desk top computer (Vista) does not show up, the unitiqute has the latest firmware, the ipod touch is a 4Th gen with the latest firmware, the duo v2 has the latest firmware, and the n stream app is the latest 3.2, i just don't know what im doing wrong the DLNA & UPUP are both on,on the duo v2 regards
