Unplugged for the duration

Posted by: mutterback on 29 October 2012

Everything is unplugged - and I'm tempted to pack it up - for the duration of the hurricane here on the east coast of the US.

The storm is still 200 miles of the coast, but the winds are already whipping like mad at 35+ MPH. Luckily, our house is very high up, though is surrounded by large trees.

We'll see how long we'll be without power, and therefore without music. I think this is a "how long" vs "if." The emergency services remind us to have our battery operated radios ready... but I looked around and of course we have none. I probably threw out my last one 5-10 years ago.

Wish us all luck....

mutterback,

My thoughts are with you. Never mind the hi-fi, just so long as you and those you love remain safe.

Best,

Peter

Good luck! Although we are 400 miles north of NYC, we can feel the gusty winds this evening. Take care....

Best of luck to all in the danger area.

Thank you all.  Blowing hard in Boston but here, inland, the only issues have been trees down, wires down, and power outages.

My Naim kit is disconnected just by coincidence, as my DAC and XPS-2 are getting shipped out tomorrow am.  Traded them towards and NDS which should arrive later this week

Here in NC we are getting some strong winds, but not too bad - I am more concerned about my 84 YO dad in NJ just outside of NYC, and my sister in the DC area - best wishes to all in the path of this big storm.  Please be safe.

Thanks Everyone!

Power back up after being down about 24 hours. Winds were pretty amazing, lots of trees down, but  we're all safe.  Philadelphia in general seemed to make it through without major damage. New York City on the other hand... Wow.

The city and all the utility companies were really prepared for this one. A telephone poll fell down at an intersection near us, and there were trucks from every utility on the scene from dawn til dusk getting it fixed. Every tree down had caution tape on it by the time I first went out at 8am.

I was headed to the living room to power down my system when the lights went out, leaving me to power down by Braille. About three minutes later, the lights came back on and stayed that way. The storm wasn't all that in the DC area, but my heart goes out to NY, NJ and CT.

In my part of NYC no power, no water, no cell phone reception. Unplugged my system 25 minutes before the 14th street substation exploded and everything went out. Never experienced anything like it. Not expected to get power back for a week.

Really crap for all you guys in NY and surrounding areas - so sorry. Hope the utilities get sorted quickly. What's the situation with the flooding in the tunnels? I guess it will be quite a while before everything is back to normal.

My heart goes out to those affected on the East Coast having lived through a natural disaster (2011 Christchurch Earthquake), and still living through it, I know what it's like to lose the basics like water, power, sewer, internet etc.

Even though we're still living in our home, chances are it's a total rebuild, I can't imagine seeing your house being washed away.

Never take modern conviences for granted; life is so much different without them.
