Naim Streaming Products Update - Version 3.17
Posted by: gert on 03 November 2012
Does anybody know details about the changes in the firmware update from 3.16 to 3.17? The pdf just tells "Issue 3.17 firmware includes DSP updates for ND5XS, NDX and SuperUniti."
Questions:
1) Does this mean that this firmware version is not of any interest to uniti users?
2) What are the DSP updates all about?
Thanks,
gert
I've seen no reference to 3.17 anywhere
It's showing on the Downloads link for the relevant products. No further details on what it's supposed to enhance or fix.
The DSP is a Digital Signal Processor - a special kind of chip used for implementing audio and video transformations. The are used in Naim's streamers to implement the digital filters that come before the actual DAC stage.
It does not seem to apply to the NDS... Be interested to beer if anyone's updated or knows what it's supposed to do?
Strange - Naim usually announce these updates on the forum. I wonder if anyone's done the update?
Searched 'Software Update 3.17', found something but the link does not appear to work.
Ummmm...
I found it in the manuals and downloads for the unitiqute. I guess I'll try and install it tomorrow, but it would be nice to know what it is supposed to fix, or what the potential benefits of installing are.
That explains why I didn't find it. I went to 'support' from the home page, then to 'updates' where there is a list of models with update history. It doesn't feature there. I've downloaded it for now. Seeing as it features on the Unitiqute page, I'm presuming it applies to my Qute (which the dealer updated to 3.16 for me before delivery last Thursday - he needn't have bothered, it seems) as well as my Superuniti.
Hi Gert, Naim use the DSP module for a variety of core processing functions. The two key ones are providing an accurate low tranport jitter SPDIF stream to be output, and also to provide an accurate and high precision oversampled digital I2S stream to the internal DAC in a way designed with careful coding to cause least impact to other system components and internal powerlines.
In the past upgrades to the DSP have subtly changed the audio performance when either providing an SPDIF stream or analogue out.
The most recent previous firmware 3.16 update had quite an interesting effect on the NDS and NDX.

I bet Naim realsed that there 3.16 frimware fits all actually didnt fit all at all, and are now back tracking on the ND5 and NDX. It ruined the sound of my ND5, in my opinion anyway.
Well I tried to update the qute using an old netbook, and got a blue screen during the update. I now have a qute that tells me it updating firmware and does nothing else.
I tried the update again and again the netbook crashed.
I will try again using a better pc. its getting more frustrating not being able to use a mac to update since my colection of pcs are now getting quite old.
updating now....
Just spotted this thread and can understand the confusion, as I am equally scratching my head over the streamer software versions. Set up our demo UnitiLite on Thursday to find that this brand new product is running version 3.18!!!!!
Just keeping on top of the updates with our customers is a challenge and an ever increasing spiral. And then there's the server software versions (now at 1.6d when I last looked... ).
Going to try to gain some further clarification on all of this from Naim HQ next week.

Anyone updated either an ND5 or NDX. Any SQ changes?
Ok. Trying again using the wife's newer laptop and it says there is no ARM software, but seems to be reinstalling everything. Fingers crossed.
Worked perfectly.
updating now....
Good luck man! Let us know how you get on.
Done on granny's borrowed laptop. Never been a glitch on all the updates that I've done on the SU (I keep the mini USB permanently plugged in at the back). Roll on Mac version.
Spirit of Eden sings to me.....
I have music. That was a bit scary. Lost all of my radio presets but better than a broken qute.
Enough of this cowardly behaviour.... I'm updating
MusicLover, notice any sound quality changes, as i think you have an ND5

Is that a Fatboy on your avatar Steve?

No time yet...but initial impression: "better"...more air/room...more clear more punch...oh and yes, on
ND5XS.
