Naim Streaming Products Update - Version 3.17

Posted by: gert on 03 November 2012

Does anybody know details about the changes in the firmware update from 3.16 to 3.17? The pdf just tells "Issue 3.17 firmware includes DSP updates for ND5XS, NDX and SuperUniti."

Questions:

1) Does this mean that this firmware version is not of any interest to uniti users?

2) What are the DSP updates all about?

Thanks,

gert

I have followed this topic with interest over the last 24 hours.  The release of the update was almost subliminal and yet members seem to happily have taken the plunge to update in the absence of any supporting information. Being a slightly nervous person I would never update without knowing what the benefits were.  As an aside my last update to 3.16 eventually involved a trip to the dealer, a cup of tea and a blather - all in all a good way to spend a Saturday morning.  I am therefore interested to hear that the update provides improvements to the listening experience and look forward to seeing if this matches the aim of the upgrade.

I do not see the Version 3.17 software update in the http://www.naimaudio.com/updates page?

Does it apply to the Uniti as well?

Given the pdf instructions, I 'd say yes, At least, I have successfully updated my Uniti (non-digital-ipod/ 24-192 board). adca

OK.  But where was the Ver. 3.17 software update notification posted in the first place???  It is not in the downloads list?

Maybe someone form Naim could clarify.

Use the path (for Uniti): HOME / HI-FI PRODUCTS / BY TYPE / ALL-IN-ONE PLAYER / NAIMUNITI 2 / MANUALS & DOWNLOADS / Software Download / Update, at the Naim main web site.

The instructions document however says: "Issue 3.17 firmware includes DSP updates for ND5XS, NDX and SuperUniti." So further clarification from Naim is indeed needed concerning other streaming products (Is there any advantages to load this?).

Yep - it's there, thanks!

3.17 minor update major one xmas time from naim

Posted on: 05 November 2012 by jobseeker

Must be imagining the changes. Strange that several people have reported the same though

Posted on: 05 November 2012 by Thorsten_L

The sound on my ND5XS is definitely much "better".

´Nough for me.

THanx NAIM!

rich46 thinks it is a minor upgrade with a major one for Christmas.

jobseeker thought he heard improvements but now not sure.

MusicLover is still convinced it sounds much better.

It would be very helpful if someone from HQ could provide some information about the upgrade, in particular its purpose and importance.  Meantime back to the speculation.

I'm sure I can hear them alright. But that doesn't mean they are really there - expectation bias and all that

hi forester.  phone naim up this afternoon and said the same, even dealers didn't know .  was told the xmas one would be the important one , don't hold your breath for santa

Airplay ?

Posted on: 05 November 2012 by VladtheImpala

My Uniti 2 really does sound "better". If this is a minor upgrade, then roll on a major one!

As noted above, I was updating from v3.15 to v3.17. Of course, I don't have another one for A/B comparison and I may be suffering from from "expectation bias".

If it ain't listed on the website under the "Manuals & Downloads" section for the product you own, it ain't applicable. I don't see how much clearer it can be.

For example, the NDS is on .16 and the .17 upgrade isn't applicable to this player. Which is why there is no link for download on its web page.

The DSP changes between .15 and .16 were considerable for the NDS. You can hear the difference. I'm not too keen on the new presentation although just about all feedback has been favorable. Don't assume newer is automatically better. It probably will be, but if like me your ears tell you different you can't roll back.

According to HQ "3.17 is for all our streaming products". Unfortunately, my question re changelog remained unanswered. adca

It would be so much simpler if Naim posted a 'sticky' to say what this firmware release does, and what products it applies to...

In the meantime, anyone tried to apply it to an NDS?

Doesn't appear to be under the manuals & downloads section on the NDS product page, where you can find it for all the other streaming products......the plot thickens

Posted on: 05 November 2012 by Harry

The plot thins. It doesn't appear to be there because it isn't. It does not apply to the NDS.
