Android App BubbleUPNP with gapless playback

Posted by: gert on 03 November 2012

Hi,

since one of the latest updates the bubbleupnp android app offers the new feature "can control external gapless renderers". I have tried this with the naim uniti and it really seems to work (sometimes). Unfortunately this version of bubbleupnp did introduce some issues with track changes and displaying the current playing position. I hope that this can be fixed and gapless playback really works soon.

Did anybody else try this already? (Maybe my wlan signal is just to bad in the living room to make it work properly.)

I couldn't get gapless to work at all :-( I think Naim don't follow the protocol precisely.

I cannot remember the default of this setting: Do you have "Settings > Control > UPnP Tweaks > Enable gapless control" enabled?

But it seems that the uniti device operates incorrectly anyway. The first track change does work gaplessly here, but the second change does not work anymore. So the second track is repeated endlessly. The BubbleUPnP developer did check the event log that I did sent him. Does a naim developer read this forum or should I send this info somewhere else?

"When the SetNextAVTransportURI is issued, the unity take a long time to respond, giving a timeout and messing track advance (beyond track 2):

[cling-49        ] WARNING  - 01:07:20.266 - d          : HTTP request took a long time: 25434ms:http://192.168.178.25:8080/AVTransport/ctrl

This is unusual, BubbleUPnP has no control over that, and only Naim could tell why it is taking so long."

I see the timeout messages too :-(

If you set the "event time out" in the "tweak UPNP" menu to e.g. 40s, the time outs disappear. Gapless track advancing seems to work then as long as the tracks are not too short. Tested it with a 17s track. Playback did stop after this.

Have you got any further about that gapless issue with BubbleUPnP and your Naim unit ? Are you satisfied with this "almost" correct behavior, since 17s tracks are maybe a bit rare ? Has this problem been reported to Naim tech support, and did Naim had any suggestion/fix for it ?

Regards

A gave up on this topic and turned gapless playback off in the BubbleUPNP settings. The uniti did behave very unwillingly. Sometimes gapless playback did work, sometimes nothing did work after some tracks. ATM I am using the naim remote to control the uniti directly to play full albums.

I have reported this to Naim and the support hotline was very interested in this topic. She told me that she could reproduce this issue and gave it to the developers. This was the last thing that I have heared about this.

Now I hope for a new uniti firmware and the N-Stream App for Android that is announced for 2013. The problem is that I am waiting for it daily and you do not know for which month it is scheduled.

Please, Naim, give us a status report on this!

Does the Android App BubbleUPNPhave a volume control?

If so where is it.

Yes it does. You can find it inside the "Now Playing" tab. This is the case when a Cambridge Audio StreamMagic is used as a renderer. I cannot tell for a Naim Unit, as I does not own this device yet, but I presume BubbleUPnP makes a volume control available on all renderers that support it.

Please note that the display of volume control must first be activated inside BubbleUPnP. Go to the "Settings" menu, and then: "Now Playing" > "Show Volume Slider" .

Hope this can help.

If I do not mix this up with another upnp app, you also can use the hardware volume keys of the android device to control the uniti volume. The volume step size can be adjusted in the preferences of BubbleUPNP. This value also affects the volume buttons that are displayed in the Android's notification bar. (To see them you might need to resize the notification bar entry to two rows instead of only one by touching, holding and dragging it down once.)

Definitely helpful.   Thank you very much.

And the volume buttons on the phone now work.

I discovered today (to my delight) that the BubbleUPnP app would control my UnitiServe/NDX. Joy! Finally the iPad can go on eBay... But not yet I'm afraid...

I've got similar problems to Gert, namely:

- It gets stuck on certain tracks - some tracks get repeated endlessly.

- It's not consistent either, sometimes playback just stops completely.

- The "Now Playing" and "Playlist" displays don't update correctly.

The workaround seems to be to turn off gapless playback which solves all of the above issues. However, it doesn't make listening to Dark Side Of The Moon much fun!

I'm not sure if it's a Bubblesoft or Naim problem but it would be great if someone has a fix...

... or if Naim finally release their Android n-Stream app. Latest I heard on that from Naim was "later this year".

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

This thread has info on configuring BubbleUpNp = works for me

I'm currently listening to Dark Side, playing faultlessly, gapless, controlled by BubbleUPnP from my Android phone having just upgraded my NDX to V3.22. Joy!

Thanks Naim and BubbleSoft, great stuff!

Now my mind starts to wonder whether this fix is a pre-cursor to Naim releasing their own Android UPnP app...

Gapless playback has never worked for me with bubble, and I also can stream from a gapless pmp and it still never worked!

gapless playback with BubbleUPnP has three requirements:

1) You really need the latest naim streamer firmware. (very important)

2) "Gapless playback" has to be activated in the bubbleUPnP settings. See "UPNP Tweaks" -> "Enable gapless control".

3) The android device must not have a broken wlan driver. My old Nexus4 had the problem that it did a wifi-disconnect in standby (when the screen was turned off). So bubbleUPnP could not send the "next track" to the uniti streamer. A Nexus5 does not have this problem.

Maybe the UPnP server has to accept two connections at the same time. But I think this should be the case for all servers. At least with a Synology NAS media server it does work. Well, at least it does work most of the time. Sometimes things get messed up and track advancing does not work. N-Stream still is the most robust way to control the streamer.
