Dear friends
I'vie just Had a strong discussion with the dealer that has ripped for me all my CDs
He has made everything in alphabetic order by NAME, not SURNAME.
So Bach is at J ( johann Sebastian), not at B (Bach)
He said that this is GD3 tagger...
and he said that even dbpoweramp does the same
I'm a Mac user and with iTunes and XLD the tagging is by Surname alphabetic order.
Don't know about GD3 or dbpowermamp
Please advise your pov

The Naim ripper system does the same . . . The Beatles are under T, and Amy Winehouse is under A.
There is no industry standard for this, and is up to personal preference how things appear in lists. (I think that most would prefer to see The Beatles under B, not T, however!) I've gotten used to it, and eventually will figure out something if I want to change it. The basic problem is that the "Artist" tag is one tag; so when it's sorted alphabetically, that's what you get. I think that some systems can ignore "The" but I'm not quite sure how.

You can change any name (artist, album or track) using Desktop Client and adopt whatever naming protocol you prefer.
I prefer artists to be listed surname first (Dylan, Bob). My HDX routinely puts the surname last when it rips something and I correct it when I check the rip, which is no problem given that I have always done it that way but would be a pain in the proverbial if you had to rename your entire collection. I don't believe there's any way to change all names at once in Desktop Client but perhaps someone will correct me on that.
You can use the same method to change The Rolling Stones to Rolling Stones if you wish but I have never wanted to do that. Sonos systems do it automatically.

Naming composers by first name before last flies in the face of convention. If you're using a Naim product, you're stuck, as the composer's name cannot currently be edited. Can this be changed ?
The workaround is to manually prefix album titles - which can be edited - by the composer's surname. Many albums are already tagged this way by the metadata providers.
Or you can learn the first names, unfortunately there were a lot of Johanns !
