Naim Label vs. iTunes

Posted by: Cryptonit on 06 November 2012

OK, so I've received e-mail about new album from Huey & The New Yorkers released on Naim Label. I'd love to purchase high definition version but.... You pay £12.99 and receive only 2/3 of the album. When you go to iTunes UK, there is 17-track version for £10.99. I know it is lossy compressed but still - you miss 5 track when purchasing directly from Naim Label. Why I cannot purchase all 17 tracks in high definition from Naim Label?

I got a free naim download code orange card with the 180g LP .

It gives one the options of MP3/CD quality or the HD.

It would be silly not to download the HD.

Stu: Just to clarify for the OP (as well as for me) say you download 24--192 and your hardware is not capable of playing that at full def--will your streamer/DAC go ahead and play it at the lower definition of which it IS capable, or do you have to convert it downward first?

You have to be able to download the HD in FLAC or WAV in the first place and store for playback.

If you don't have the kit capable of downloading HD and playing it back?

There is no point.

Just download the CD quality or buy and rip the CD.

MP3 is not worth having imo.

The 180g LP sounds brill.

I had to change the cheap inner white paper sleeve for a better quality one though.

Simon  I thought you would of had that simple thing covered by now.

John,

I played side one four times before turning it over and did the same with side 2 tonight.

I love it.

If you like the more laid back tracks music style of the FLC albums?

You should like this a lot.

Very nice SQ & pressed bit of 180g vinyl.

Understood, Stu.  I do have the capability to both download and play the hi def stuff.  I just wonder from a functional standpoint whether, if one didn't have the playback capability, the Naim streamer gear has the ability to automatically say "Hey, I can't play this stuff, but I'll just down-convert it and play it that way."

Thanks,

Russ

If one has a Mac computer or any of its babies  and you try and download the HD as you would any other MP3 or anything from itunes/amazon you will just  get fail and a load of numbers and letters come up.

IE nothing to play back.

You need to have the right software loaded. for the FLAC or Wav.

I may  be missing something--suspect I am, but bear with me for one more round.  I guess what I am thinking is this:

I download 24 x 192 to my P.C. in a lossless format so that I have the full nominal definition of the music in a computer file.

I put that file on a thumb drive--or a server of some sort.

I then attempt to feed that 24 x 192 file into a streamer/DAC/Amplifer that is not capable of decoding and playing a file with that full definition.

Would the unit be able to play it at reduced definition--say CD quality--that it is capable of playing--or would you have to modify it to a different codec using a computer, prior to playing it on the system just described?

Russ,

Try downloading a High Def album of choice and report back how you get on.

Its 4:39 in the morning here and i need a hours sleep before the builders painters and Kitchen fitters turn up at 7 to put right work from a few months ago.

Hi Guys,

iTunes have bonus material, purely because providing iTunes with exclusive bonus material (rather than keeping it all to ourselves for sale through Naim Label) affords us bargaining power that helps us secure promotional space (the same is true of any physical exclusives we may have run). The HatNY release was on iTunes front page week of release and now has several other 'store front' promotions throughout iTunes. Hope you can appreciate that whilst, I am very passionate about growing NaimLabel.com, iTunes is a dominant force in digital downloading and such placements allow us the opportunity to reach millions and overall increase sales and help keep Naim Label going. We have a responsibility to our artists to provide mainstream exposure and help their music be heard. I recognise there is a trade-off being made here that is not ideal for some of our loyal customers, and I am sorry that this is the case. I hope you can see that I am simply trying to hustle all I can in the music industry to make the label a success! Any of you loyal forumites who’ve downloaded the HD of the new Huey album, can use the Label Contact Us page, drop us a line with your order no, forum name and address, and we’ll happily send a CD copy of the After Hours EP (containing the 5 bonus track cover versions in question). Cool?

STU, what exactly is the problem with the white inner bag? I’ll take this up with manufacturer.

Simon,

Understandable & very cool. I've just ordered HD and will drop mail with order no. Thank you.

Regards,

Tomasz

Thanks for your view. I do like the laid back FLC style. I have also just realised it is now on Spotify, so will give it a listen first. Cheers.

Simon,

Thats the problem.

Its just a white paper record sleeve with a big hole in the middle.

Its the Naim label ,

It should have a better poly lined sleeve  imo.

Stu.

I thought one was supposed to let a record "rest" to cool down, and that playing the one side repeatedly accelerated the wear. Am I not remembering that correctly? Or am I just making it up?

Russ,

if your audio device cannot play a certain resolution it can also not convert it to a lower resolution for playback. This is something you need to do yourself using dbPoweramp, foobar or whatever.

I also have some 192/24 files, which my SBT isn't capable of playing. I keep a highres archive for future use, when I will have the hardware for it. Meanwhile I just converted to 48/24 which I can even stream wirelessly to the Squeezebox Radio in my bedroom.

A copy of The After Hours EP came in the post this morning from Naim.

And very good it is to.

Its a must have imo because it has five very good tracks on it.

Thanks again to Simon Drake and Simon Halliday for this freebie.
