HD Music, I would like some more please.

I was wondering where you fine folk obtained your Hi-Res downloads?
I have a few from the excellent Naim label, a couple from that "Scottish lot", and some I have downloaded from the Muse and Porcupine Tree band websites.
I tried HD Tracks, but our colonial cousins can't sell across the pond! (Not still holding a grudge about some bloomin' tea I hope!).
Where can I get hold of some decent Hi-Res re-issues of the albums in my vinyl collection? Floyd, Genesis, Stones, Boston....You get what I like?
Cheers.
The Beatles apart ... There is very little high resolution music around that I find compelling enough to buy and since I discovered the Music on Vinyl reissues of some great records, my digital listening has declined.
A lot of what you get on high resolution digital is virtuouso stuff ... Very well played ... However, they sound like hi-fi demonstation recordings rather than music to enjoy.
Hopefully this will change. So for the best quality i buy vinyl copies from specialist labels like MoV
That said some ordinary CDs sound fantastic ... Try Karine Polwart for wonderful SQ and her songs are rather better than those from the dinosaur outfits that we usually see in high resolution.
The new digital music age is reminicent of the early home computer market, where folk bought ever more elloborate machines and then looked around from some programs that would run on it. I think a lot of hi-fi has gone that way with folk buying kit that can play 24/192 music and then finding there isn't any worth buying .... Still next year it will be DSD or 32/384 and some folk will still buy the same old Floyd albums yet again and find that the Piper at the Gates of Dawn still doesn't sound as good as the original mono pressing ... That said the CD box set of Piper was fantastic.
So i wouldn't worry about HD Tracks ... Upsampling is not going to make much difference anyway.
Cheers Guido.
I must disagree about the 24/192 though.
I am a Muse fanatic, so I got the rather excellent 2nd Law in a nice box set. The CD is good, the vinyl (on my trusty LP12) is great, as is the db poweramp WAV rip,but the hi-res download is blow your socks off gorgeous.
The same for the excellent "Meet me in London" download by Antonio Forcione and Sabina Sciubba.
It isn't so much the wonderful voices, or the virtuoso performances, it is the space they have to perform in.
The silences are as big a part as the sound.
I will carry on playing the vinyl, but it is nice not having to haul my self out of the comfy chair every 20 minutes to turn the blessed thing over!
Hi peter
It's all a bit hit and miss but I've enjoyed B&Ws society of sound...subscription is very reasonable. They've also added some general retail opportunities as well. The two available so far are tubular bells and peter Gabriel's So which are not a million miles from your taste? Apparently they can't be sold in the states so, unlike the extradition treaty, it does appear to be a two way thing!

You are a lucky man, sir ... to have one of your favourite bands in high resolution
Sad to report I've see no Half Man Half Biscuit, Cradle of Filth, Napalm Death or, surprisingly, Bauhaus albums in high resolution .... I naturally assumed if the ever popular Bauhaus were unavailable in 24/192 that not much else would be. Glad to hear the Muse, at least, is pioneering in this field.
Try Highresaudio.com they have quite a few albums to choose from. Although I have to agree with Guy that I find it very difficult to find any music I want to buy in High Res.
I currently have a grand total of 3 High Res albums - Muse like you, the new Smashing Pumpkins album (purchased from their website) and even though I'm not really a fan The Eagles ( And I have to say that the title track from Hotel California does sound pretty incredible 24/192). I will soon be adding High Res album number 4 when Blue Lines from Massive Attack is released in 24/96.
Thanks chaps,
I already have a load of stuff from the B&W site, and some ,like Grindhouse and Little Axe, are real finds. I have just got the new Tori Amos from the Scottish lot (don't like mentioning them here really!).
If you like Gabriel, I got the rather up and down Scratch My Back album from the Society of Sound. When it is good, it is very very good. But when it is bad it is sh........you get the picture.
Anyone else get any sites or recommendations, please let me know. One of the joys of a good audio system, is discovery.
Wow, I didn't know that 2nd Law was available as a highres download. Thanks for the mention.
But I have to admit that I am not really actively looking for highres material. I am already happy when I can find a lossless CD quality download. The stuff by Loreena McKennitt it available as such from her home page. And in Germany musicload.de has started to sell new releases also as wav files. They're pretty expensive though.
I've managed to accumulate a reasonable 24bit library from various sources and most of it does sound great but some of my reference demo material is still 16bit so there is still life in the old dog yet, ideally we would have the option to buy all new releases in 24bit with hopefully back catalogues becoming available over time but I fear we are a long way from that day.
I've definitely got to give the nod to Muse's 2nd Law in 24/96 though, a fantastic album that just sounds even better in 24bit, 'Unsustainable' is my favourite track of the year, it's power at volume is just stunning, I'm playing it to everyone who comes in at the moment, Muse fans or not, it just has to be heard
I had the good fortune to get a ticket for the first O2 show, and the 24/92 file is as close as I have heard to a live performance.
I must admit that the lack of polish live, did add something, but we all strive to get the artist perform in our lounge, but if we acheived it, would we be happy?
Shameless plug I know, but the very fact you and other people have to ask that question, should be reason enough for you to sign my petition!
