Hi,

Hi,
I hope this isn’t again the House Rules, but I've decided to create a petition to try and get Record Labels attention as to the demand for High Definition Music downloads
The reason why I’m doing this is because I’m really annoyed there is nowhere to download mainstream music in high definition. There are a few sites with classical music on or obscure music, but this is not what the majority of people want to listen to, and it’s not the music that I want to listen to either.
Forget arguments that the majority of people are happy with MP3 music for the minute. I genuinely think if the option was there for people, they would use it. I also think that this a classic example of how Record Labels are completely out of touch and don’t have any vision, just look at how slow they have been to make legal digital music downloads available.
I believe that this is a perfect opportunity for Record Labels to get with the times, by giving people what they want (albeit small market at the moment) and for them to make some money along the way (which isn’t a bad thing).
If you agree, please sign my petition. Thanks
Ironically, the Naim label does offer hi-def downloads, including three of my own albums. I know it's not what you want; on the other hand, come for the sound and maybe stay for the music.

Fred's stuff is the full package - sound and music. Your stuff gets a lot of airtime at our place, Fred. The 3 HR downloads, and "Open Book" which is great.

I haven't checked out any of your albums yet, but i will. I am a member of B&W society of sound, so I do get to listen to a few different artists on there in 24Bit.
By "come for the sound and maybe stay for the music" I hope we are on the same wave length, by me saying, if you listening to well recorded music then it can make listening to artists that you wouldn't normally easier / more appealing.
It's just there is plenty of mainstream music that I like, that I know would sound a lot better if it wast totally compressed. Although this could be achieved with CD's, I just think, you might as well try and push for the whole hog and ask for 24Bit recordings.

All the best,

Thanks once again for the very kind words ... I'm so glad my music strikes the right chord for you!

Yes, well-recorded and well-mastered, highest fidelity possible ... it has beauty and pleasure in and of itself, regardless of the musical content. So my idea is that you'll enjoy the sound so much that your ears will be more open to music which may not be your normal cup of tea.
All the best,
Fred

Just spotted that you are also listed / credited with performing on the Naim true stereo cd?
Must throw it on and have a listen again

Yes, as well as on a few other Naim samplers ... they're all tracks from my three Naim albums.

A worthy cause and noble effort, I support your views since little of what is available in high-resolution audio (or is it high definition like you say?) has major appeal.
There are some points though as regards to compressed music whilst you mentioned it - equally there should be movements towards getting first lossless downloading from places such as iTunes as a starting point. After speculation that open-source Apple lossless would herald the coming of lossless purchase downloads, even this has not advanced enough to say that you can have at least the choice of uncompressed download purchases let alone high-res. Once uncompressed CD equivalent downloading is much more available then it seems a reasonable advance to talk of mainstream high-res. Even though you say you might as well push for the whole hog and ask for 24 bit, I wonder if I'd be that keen to then buy everything that I already have on CD as high-res. Would we also see Iranian punk rock and Taiwanese sludge/thrash metal in high-res mainstream? That would be astonishing. HDtracks looked like the best bet for mainstream, sadly being from the land of the free they will not serve us now. It seems like going from mass market compressed downloading straight to highres downloads and skipping the middle market (CD or lossless equivalent), is like going from Greggs pies straight to Ivy restaurant fancy schmancy and skipping the middle market Strada or Carluccio's - a tasty prospect but a tall order.
Still good luck in your cause I support your views (I'm off to have a look at the NaimLabel for fred simon)
Brilliant idea Mike G, consider me signed up and the best of luck.
I have said many times that now we can't access HDTracks, legally anyway, there must be an opening for a European version as surely if the copyright issues have already been sorted out Stateside then it is just a matter of hosting it over here and it would be more money for the record companies, I struggle to see why we are being left out over here, I know not everything is available on HDTracks but at least it is a good start.
But the reality is that unfortunately Disposable hero is correct, if we can't even download 16bit Lossless from what is the biggest audio distributor of downloads in the world then I fear 24bit mainstream downloads are still a long way off.
Saying that exercises like this are priceless as we have to get the ball rolling somehow.
I completely agree with the comment that, the problem is with the compression used. I want that sorted too!
I do feel like I am p1ssing in the wind at the moment with only 8 signatures. If I had more time and contacts I would go on music forums, foreign sites, facebook group etc. I do honestly thing though, that if it got the backing of a major magazine, e.g What Hifi and specialist retailers etc, then the whole issue would get more attention.
I posted on the What hifi forum, thinking it would get a larger audience but they seem content with discussing which £200 cd player / speakers etc.
I cant believe that the industry is just stagnating and in terms of the quality of downloads has managed to go backwards. Its been 30 years since cd was introduced, we deserve better.
What's the saying, Mike... "Naim wasn't built in a day".
Mike,
Thanks for taking the initiative. It is a shame that so few have signed (although there are now eleven of us!). This is a pity as the topic has been raised many time before and I am sure that many here would benefit from access to good high quality downloads. Perhaps we need to aim to get a new signature every hour and for people to post here to keep it on the agenda.
The wording has now been changed from Lables to Labels!
After it being pointed out to me its wrong! Whoops!
Mike,
It is good to see the numbers rising slowly (37 now). I cannot see why anyone who streams music and reads this Forum would not see the benefits in greater availability of high definition music.
I'm going to try and create a facebook group, to help spread the word / by having a focal place for people to have a chat & discuss music etc.
I just wish that everyone who clicked on the topic, in the forum signed the petition, then it would have hundred of supporters.
I'm going to visit computer forums and maybe email a few magazines / recording studios directly.
It must be really soul destroying to work in a studio, put in all that effort to get the "sound" the artist wants, only to have it completely ruined by compressing it. I'm sure a lot of artists don't realise that the sound they hear in the studio isnt the same mix(?) / Compression / sound that people hear at home.
I wrote a letter to Hifi Choice last night and just noticed a certain editor sign the petition, any luck and the magazine would do an article on the subject in general. The writers there must have loads of contacts with manufactures / retailers etc!
Mike,
Just noticed that the 'letter' still has labels and lables in the text.
I give up! lol
I guess strictly speaking the petition should also be addressed to online retailers..Amazon, HMV, Play etc as the Record label could say, we can make the material available but retailers but to demand the content.
I obviously haven't thought the whole process through as if it were some military campaign, but I'm more than willing to accept tips and advice.
I've noticed that the "letter" can have "targeted email" sent, it says "You're more likely to get your decision maker's attention if you add their email address here. We'll email them when someone signs your petition"
I was going just going to wait until the petition reaches a decent number (hopefully) and email R.L and Retailers directly, I guess it makes sense to use this feature. Could do with some input in population a list, might be best to do it over P.M though?
If anyone is interested, I've decided to start a facebook group as a focus point.
I've also posted in more detail the though behind the petition and why its important.
Just joined MIke and signed the petition. need to go viral with this to stand a chance, only 50 sign up so far.
Amazing how people put up with compressed low fi music.
I know, its proving a lot harder than what I expected. ~There is only so much I can do, so it will have to be progressively as I target different groups of people. I've posted on a few more forums last night. I think I've covered the most popular ones, except the unofficial Cyrus one, as I'm banned from there!
I would have thought that America would have been a big marker, but other than Stereophile, I don't know any other magazines / forums out there.
Next step will, be 1) post on music / amateur band forums 2) email retailers 3) email manufactures....will have to think where to go form there.
I would have though, if the petition is be taken seriously by any record label / retailer, such as amazon, then I would need between 2 - 3,000 signatures. At the moment, that seems a bit too much, but its only be a week.
