The Next Big Step Ahead

I feel that one of the main hazards and limiting factor in today's streaming is the server - client technology.

It would be much more convenient and versatile if streamers would simply 'serve' themselves with all the available (or defined) content whithin their reach.

This would solve all kinds of compatibility issues on top of being a lot more user friendly. And also the widely shanted at UPnP would become redundant.

I believe Sonos is already operating on this basis.

So buy a HDX, the perfect ripper/server/streamer

Or a UnitiServe for that matter....

The HDX is primarily a hard disk player, though it will obviously do what I was mentioning, but a a price beyond belief.

The UServe is not a full player, it misses the DAC section.

I was more thinking in terms of the 'regular' streamer to be more self-contained, not needing a server to run externally.

Meridian have gone totally the other way, I believe.  They are happy to sell streamer-players, but don't sell anything with a hard drive.  BYO for that.

There is some logic to audio companies not selling hard drives . . . until you run up on your initial point that server - client technology seems far from completely standardized.

It would be strange to demand that a streamer should transform itself into a server. When Naim only had servers everybody on the forum or those that wrote wanted streamers, otherwise Naim would go out of business. Now a lot of problems come up for streamer users and people start to demand servers.

Get an ns01 can function as a stand alone player, and be upgraded with the Ndac and still is much cheaper than the hdx.

As for Meridian in fact, using their own hard drive storage is the only way you can run their streaming system. It's a totally closed system as far as serving and streaming are concerned.

Or I think one way to address your requirement is for Naim to release their upnp software.. You still have a sever.. Ie that is the whole point of a network player, but the compatability issue is addressed by using known peer software.
