NDS..can't connect?

Posted by: Dustysox on 16 November 2012

Folks, how does one reset network on the NDS? I have powered down, ran Factory reset and still can't connect via ethernet to my NAS. Everything else on network is ok..I notice lights on ethernet port light up ok on power on\ reset, they just don't light up when powered up after a few mins.

My trusty ol Logitech Transporter all works ok, so problem seems to point to NDS..

Have you changed any of the default settings on the NDS, Dusty?

(You're not one of these 'fixed IP address' affectionados, for example?)

BTW lights on ethernet ports usually only light up when traffic is flowing (when it's talking to something on the network)

...and does n-stream see the NDS (if you're using n-stream)?

Posted on: 16 November 2012 by Dustysox

Hi Roger,

I don't think so. I remember with any Naim streamer it has literally been connect ethernet cable to it, and "music". I have borrowed a US and completely disconnected it. Still no joy?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Hi,

No joy with n stream

I don't have an NDS :-( but if my SU ever has trouble finding the network then I try selecting inputs that require the network (UPnP and iRadio) and/or use the menu to select Network Settings to get it to find network. It always finds it in the end but it has taken a minute or two sometimes. It's worth setting a static IP for the NDS (I've done it through the router). That solved problem of my streamer dropping off network. Now the only time it needs to find the network is after it's just been turned on or the network has been disconnected. Cheers Ian

What i have noticed on Netgear GS108 is that port where NDS is connected has no lights on back of it.All other connections have "flashing" green light (not sure if thats relaven).

Tried different ethernet cables, no joy..

Dusty, using the NDS handset (remote control), press the spanner (tools) then select Network setup (3rd down) and tell me what you see under- name, wireless, status and DHCP.

Tried a different port?

You can swap ethernet wires between ports without messing too much up !!

Posted on: 16 November 2012 by rjstaines

ALSO push the network cable into the port fairly hard !

Posted on: 16 November 2012 by Dustysox

hi Roger,

Network settings

Wireless: Not used-wired

status: no network

DHCP : yes

Try swapping the ethernet cable to another port on the Netgear, and seat the cable securely. Let me know what happens.

Posted on: 16 November 2012 by rjstaines

Oh and just push the ethernet cable into the NDS 'securely' (i.e. fairly hard).

Hi roger,

Just tried different ports different cables etc. all points to NDS.  Every other experiment works.

Ho hum.

I have to say it looks like you're right.  I'd give Phil an email & ask what he thinks, he is after all pretty good on networking (this evening's understatement).

"Bon chance" as they often say in Salisbury, Dusty.  Update here when you've found what's wrong.

Hi Roger,

Connected antenna to NDS and set for wireless connection, all working. (NDS running from NAS as normal), does not want to "play" with ethernet.

Anyway, thank you for all your help. I need to go to bed, got a 10th Birthday bash tomorrow...candles on the S800's.......not! Looking forward to it.

Dusty... What has changed / what have you done between when it was working and now not?

Does the light led light on the the back of the NDS where the Ethernet point is? Does it it pulse at all?

Have you tried changing Ethernet cable? Ensuring when you do it clicks in both the switch and and NDS.

I assume your DHCP server remains the same and other devices get their addresses?

You have tried power cycling the NDS with the Ethernet cable attached?

Hi Simon,

I have borrowed a US. When i got it home last night the only Ethernet cable i had  long enough for it was the one connected to my NDS.. therefore using my ol DC1 i connected US to switch via that existing ethernet cable, and  connected DC1 to the digital output of US to the digital input of the NDS. All worked well. Then I tried using same ethernet cable back into the NDS, no joy. I have the NDS running wireless and at the mo this works. I have tried different ethernet cables with the same results ( no leds flashing on switcher and NDS ethernet input). I'm guessing this rules out cable issue as same results with different cables.  Also powering NDS/router/NAS etc makes no difference.

A real chin stroking problem!!!

Do the LEDs light on the NDS Ethernet connector on the back of the NDS?

If you have tried different cables etc and plugging into switch ports, the LEDs don't twinkle on the NDS connection when you connect the Ethernet lead, it does start to sound like the NDS network adapter has gone bad.

I guESS try with your dealers network, and if still bad, it will need to go back to Salisbury

Hi Simon,

Leds do light when NDS powers up, and or factory reset takes place.

Not when plugging in ethernet cable. NDS screen says "No network-press list to retry" then says "no network" This i've tried with different cables and no joy.The only way for music is to disconnect ethernet cable from NDS and run wirelessly

How on earth can something like this happen?

Posted on: 17 November 2012 by Simon-in-Suffolk

It does sound unusual, but the change occurred when yoan unplugged and plugged the Ethernet cable and Iguess it's just possible one of the spring connectors in the socket is not making contact or an electrical failure. Network adapters, likea powersupplies and HDDs  are considered a weaker link, albeit usually very reliable. But Dusty I would try your NDS on somebody else's network, just to rule those options out.

Posted on: 17 November 2012 by rjstaines

Simon made a good point earlier - ensure both ends of the ethernet cable are plugged in (NDS & switch) AND make sure the switch and the router are connected together.BEFORE powering up the NDS...(or anything else on the network).

Dusty, you did have the router connected to the switch all the time, didn't you... if not, it will do exactly what you are seeing !!!

(sorry, I should have asked that question a lot sooner)

Hi Allen.. All good things to try.. But my line of thinking is that this has been working fine with i assume powercycles etc until the Ethernet lead was unplugged and  then re connected and nothing else has changed... Also the wireless is fine.

So

Plug the NDS into the switch and power the NDS  on... Does the switch port light? If so link is up so comms should be possible and tends to indicate there is not a physical issue.

If the switch LEDs flicker a few secsonds after you power up the NDS then it does suggest the DHCP discovery frames are being sent out.. And if not working then I would experiment beproviding a fixed address.

Edit Rjstaines... Absolutely please check your router is still plugged into your switch and the the LEDs are on on that port.

Gents,

Thank you for all your help and advice.

I have unplugged everything, all router cables etc. Rebooted router and logged into router. Connecting NAS I can see it appear very quickly on router home devices page of router. Using that same cable that is plugged directly into router connecting it to NDS and going back into router page, the NDS does not appear. I can only conclude that ethernet connection on NDS has a problem ( as mentioned by Simon). I guess this will mean a trip back to dealer and onto Naim....ho hum. I can still run it wireless for the time being.

Posted on: 17 November 2012 by Dustysox

Can i conclude that the problem lies with ethernet connection on NDS?

Lights do flash on and off on NDS ethernet connection when powered on or off and when factory reset takes place. The lights don' t stay on with ethernet connected to NDS. this is true at switch end as well if I unplug ethernet from router and connect to switcher Netgear 108.
