NDS..can't connect?
Posted by: Dustysox on 16 November 2012
Folks, how does one reset network on the NDS? I have powered down, ran Factory reset and still can't connect via ethernet to my NAS. Everything else on network is ok..I notice lights on ethernet port light up ok on power on\ reset, they just don't light up when powered up after a few mins.
My trusty ol Logitech Transporter all works ok, so problem seems to point to NDS..
Allen, Good points.. Yes DHCP manages and looks out for this possibiliy.. Ie when the link comes up the NDS will send a discovery message to look for a DHCP server and then a request for an IP address to that DHCP and the DHCP checks no one is using the IP address either statically or dynamically before it sends out the reply to the NDS. However this does take a few seconds to playout.. It's not instant.
So if the DHCP discovery message is interrupted.. The DHCP server won't see the request..AnfD the NDS will just sit there.. until you powercycke or perhaps the NDS times out and resends the discovery message. This part is down to Naim's implementation.
Dusty does the light on the switch port connecting to the NDS light? From what you saying it sounds like the NDS thinks there is no physical link to the switch and turns off the port... This implies a physical problem. I really would take it to your dealer or get them around to check.
Its hard to totally visualise what is happening via the forum.

connected DC1 to the digital output of US to the digital input of the NDS.
I might be well off track here so please excuse me if this is the case. Are you still running the dig out from the US into the dig in on the NDS? Or was this a quick patch to see if they would communicate? In normal operation they would be communicating via the network.
FWIW - everything works seamlessly until I change something or switch something off. The NDS can then play dead, particularly when trying (and failing) to find the network or server thereon. Powering down everything in the chain and restarting in the sequence of router, bridge, NAS, HDX and NDS always does the trick but can take a quarter of an hour. I expect you've done all this but if you haven't powered everything down from the Router forwards, you should try it.
Picking up an Allen's point, Dusty, the US is set to DHCP, not fixed IP isn't it? (system, system status, address mode = DHCP?).
Otherwise looking not-good.
But will post any other ideas that crop up. Just been shutting all my lot down to move the Powerline off the HDX and onto the PS300 and then switching a MusicWorks from the 300 to the HDX, so haven't been watching posts here.

Dusty, what happens when you plug the NDS directly into the router, not the switch?
If you're not getting any network activity lights on the back of the NDS and you are *SURE* that the cable connecting it to the network is good and that it is plugged in at the far end then it does point to a fault somewhere.
Firstly try the cable that you're plugging the NDS into your network with another device (Your laptop? Make sure you turn off the lappys wireless connection though.) to make sure that it can connect to your network and then try another cable into the NDS.
The lights on the Ethernet port should illuminate and indicate a connection on a hardware level and don't need the NDS to have valid IP addresses etc.
Drop me a line at the office if still no luck.
Cheers
Phil
Hi all,
the ethernet cable that is currently plugged into US (which has flashing leds) has also been plugged into NDS which does not bring on the NDS leds.
A trip to Salisbury beckons for ones NDS.
Thank you all for most helpful answers. I certainly have learnt a lot.
Ignorant though I am, it seems highly unlikely that unplugging a cable would cause the NDS to fail to the extent it needs factory work. Stranger things have happened but I would (for the time being) be confident that Naim Support will resolve it in situ.
Good luck. A sad loss - but not for long.

Cheers Harry for your thoughts.
Ignorant, never. In fact your posts are always very informative and interesting.
B+ keep up the good work!!!
