N-stream without internet access

Posted by: pz on 17 November 2012

A question from a beginner:

Can N-Stream controll application be used to controll a streamer without internet access ?

I have a small wired home network consists of naim streamer + synology nas.

I would like to use an ipad wirelessly connected to this "network" running N-Stream app.

on it to controll my system. Main reason is that to get album/cover arts visible during playback.

I have no internet access in the basement where my rig is installed.

Can it be done without internet access ?

Thx for the posts.

I am going to guess by 'internet access' you mean 'Local Area Network'

If what you are saying is your wireless signal does not get to the basement, then in short no you won't be able to use nStream.

You need to extend your wireless or network range down into the basement. A gash solution that may work would be a couple of home plugs, one at the router end the other in the basement with a wireless access point connected. Not saying it will defo work but would be a solution.

Dear garyi!

Thank you very much for your reply.

My current setup in the basement is:

I have small Netgear switch and my streamer (NDS) and my NAS are connected

to it by ethernet cables. They work together prefectly.

I would connect a wireless router to the one of the free port of the switch and connect

IPad to this small network wirelessly if it is possible.

The question is that whether N-Stream application running on Ipad needs internet access

to work or it could controll my streamer in the mentioned environment as well. (Without

internet.)

Sorry for my English.

Hi pz, Nstream will work without Internet  connectivity, but clearly the lookup information screens won't work as they use resources on the Internet, but other than that you"ll be fine.

This is what I wanted to know.

Hi - just to add...

You *WILL* get cover art if your tracks are tagged with cover art or the cover art files are present on your UPnP server and the UPnP server is able to send them to the streamer however you will not get any "Rovi" access or internet radio.

I would suggest that you really do need to have a router on there to do DHCP duties (even if it's not connected to the internet on its WAN side) so that everything is given appropriately compatible IP addresses rather than relying on devices to "Auto IP" unless you are up to assigning static IP addresses on your standalone network.

Cheers
