advice needed for sending music to my Unitiqute

Posted by: troika on 21 November 2012

I'm seeking some easy to understand advice for sending flac files to my Unitiqute.

I am currently sending my flac files from my Goflex home NAS drive to my Unitiqute via my PC using Kinsky software from Linn. It's an odd mixture but I like the Kinsky layout. My problem is that my software will only send the flac files a track at a time and not the whole album at once. Can anyone advise me of any other good user friendly software I can use that I can use that may be more suitable.

Is the problem here that I have it set up wrong?

I can run whole albums if I use the Naim remote control directly on the Unitiqute but cannot read the Qute men from my side of the room.

I really dont want to have to buy any apple products. Help!

Have you tried the Asset UPnP server software?  Many folks have good luck with that, it seems.

Thanks Bart, I'm just downloading Asset now to have a look at it. Does it run alone or do I use it with Kinsky?

Downloaded Asset - Great with Kinsky but still only one track at a time.

You should just be able to use the NAS, no PC required, on the same network as the Qute. Then the Qute can pull the music from the drive, using NStream app or the remote to control it.

Asset works great, but will need to run on your PC.It is possible to install it on your NAS, but can be difficult to impossible depending on how the NAS is set up. Most likely you'll need pretty solid LINUX knowledge to install it.

However - your NAS may already have a UPNP server installed. If so, you don't need the PC and the Qute should find it. Make sure its turned on and it knows where the music directory is on your NAS.

A lot of us are also fans of VortexBox, which turns an old PC into a music server and autoripper, and works great with Naim streamers. Note that this will delete *everything* on your PC. www.vortexbox.org. You can also buy new, dedicated VortexBox "appliances" for about the same money as a new, higher end NAS.

You can also look at the iPeng app which is available on Android and iOS

I can use the NAS direct to the Unitiqute with the Naim remote but the Qute display is far too small for me to see from my listening position.

I think I'm going to have to go down the Vortexbox route.

I am happy to control the music via my laptop but find it frustrating that I can only play one track at a time.

Excellent choice, I find it works really well with the Qute.

Guido: Curious--I think the answer to this is "yes" but thought I would check while the subject is fresh.  I will probably end up with a UnitiServe SSD and will of course require a NAS.  Suppose I were to buy the much less-expensive Vortexbox Appliance right now and later decide I want the US-SSD.  If you know off the top of your head, could the VBA be a NAS solution for the US without further fuss or ado?  Thanks,

If I can reply - Yes. The vortexbox "appliance" is both an auto ripper and UPNP server - the UPNP server aspect of it replaced the NAS.

I think its a tremendous deal - only a bit more expensive than a decent NAS and the all in one ripper/UPNP service is great. Mine is also *much* more reliable than my Lacie NAS.

The only complaint I have is that the vortexbox auto ripper only accesses the MusicBrainz database, which isn't as complete as the method that DBPowerAmp uses, which uses 5+ databases and lets you choose. For obscure recordings, it sometimes doesn't find the metadata. However, for any main stream rock, pop or classical release it works great and there's no need to mess around with software or clicking. just pop in a cd, it pops out in 3 minutes, and you're good to go.

troika: Is it OK with you if I ask a couple of more questions on your thread about the VB?

You carry on Russ. I'm learning as I'm reading mate

Thanks, troika.  I am glad to know I can use the VTB appliance, not just as a ripper and server, but also as a NAS.  Is it as easy as just adding the UnitiServe to the network and letting it find the VTB which will then serve as the NAS--or would it need to be tweaked for its new function?

Thanks,

Russ

Yes.  Should work the same way you find & connect an NAS.

You should also be able to play from the Vortex box using its control app - ipeng - which is available for Android. I haven't tested this, but someone else commented that he was using it that way.

Thanks mutterback and troika.

I'm not 100% sure as I don't have a US. However, Vortexbox supports file sharing so if the US supports NFS or CIFS then it should work .... I wouldn't do it that way because I'm not sure what the US gives you if you are already streaming from the VB appliance. I've never understood the US SSD as it requires a NAS and if you have a NAS that supports UPnP then you're already there.

The US HDD makes sense to me as it is your NAS, Ripper, UPnP server ... it is almost a Vortexbox.

As always I'd go Vortexbox ... streamer ... and spend the money on DAC and what comes after.

I'd only ever consider the US when I'd max'd out everything else.

However, my view is far from universal.

All the best, Guy

Guy:I too am leaning toward buying and staying with just the VBA, but want to have options.

Would the DAC be something one would/could feed the SU?   I was thinking not.

Best Regards,

Russ
