best way to back up stored music

Posted by: APT on 22 November 2012

Hi

I would welcome  any suggestions on the best way to backup my music collection. I currrently use a zone ripper max (4 TB) to act as a ripper and storage device at the same time. I have about 2 TB of music stored in FLAC format. I use an imac as my computer at home. Do I need a NAS drive ? I am not very technical minded vis a vis computers , thats why I got the zoneripper.

Thanks in advance.

2 options - an NAS or a locally attached USB/Firewire Drive.  The benefit of the NAS is that you can leave it on and run an incremental backup program like the Mac Time Machine utility.  However, your initial 2TB backup to the NAS could take *days* onto an NAS over the network (especially if you are using wireless) and will probably need baby sitting.  If you just want a secure backup, and would do it every 2 weeks or so, USB or Firewire will be faster.  I would still use backup software, which can manage doing it incrementally - only backing up what's changed each time you do it.  Google "Mac Backup" there are a lot of good options. I use rsync from the command line, which is already included and works great.

Thanks Mutterback,

I will look into getting a new NAS drive. Any good suggestions?

A usb drive is quite simple; don't need a nas just to back up.  The usb drive is easier to put in a safe place (fireproof safe; bank vault) if you're really intent on a strong backup.

All my music is stored on a Qnap, Qnaps can replicate folders between other Qnaps using real time replication or Rsync backups.

I replicate my music folders to another Qnap located 300mtrs away at my brother inlaws over a Wi-Fi bridge, works very well indeed.
