Bike Stolen - looking for sympathy

Posted by: mutterback on 23 November 2012

I know there are a lot of bike folks here...

noticed that someone stole my bike from our garage just before we all sat down for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. I'm an idiot for not leaving it locked.  It was a very nice trek mountain bike. So now the question is - new mountain bike or the ND5 I've been saving for :-(

Though, in reflection, I'm eternally grateful that the worst thing going on in my life yesterday on Thanksgiving was having a fancy bike stolen.

Will need to take the road bike out today instead.... Life could be a lot harder.

Sorry dont do sympathy, but similar thing happened to one of my M/cycle dealers some years ago.

he got a phone call from the police to say the alarm at his Honda dealership had gone off. As it was about 3 AM he decided to cycle to the shop. When he got their he parked his push bike against the front of the shop and went inside to make sure all was OK. When he came out bike was gone, some toe rag had nicked it at 3 in the morning.

The saying goes....LOCK IT OR LOSE IT.

Getting ones bike stolen must really suck.

I’ve always been very lucky for it never to happen […yet] and it’s probably more luck than the thumping great Abus padlock and chain.

But I’d of thought in the USofA where you happily hang horse thieves, the punishment fit for the crime would be conveyed to modern day bicycle bandits, perhaps strung up to the nearest lamp post instead of tree?

Preferably after a Teflon coated brake cable flogging?

Need something to put the buggers off.

I will extend you my deepest and most sincere sympathy.

Warming up the tea pot now, one lump or two?

I never find Debs's posts strange.  Interesting, thoughtful, soulful, and illuminating are all words that come to mind.  IMO, this forum needs more nymphs like her!

Mutterback - sorry your bike got ripped off man. Would you have used it this winter?  If not, I'd say keep focused on the ND5 XS.  But if you need it to get around, then I guess you have no option but to replace it.

A couple of summers ago, my garage was broken into during the wee hours (side door was locked, but there was no deadbolt).  Lost a few grand worth of Milwaukee and DeWalt power tools.  Was the first time I was ever burgled, so I like to think it was just odds catching up with me.  But the truth is that Mrs. Hook had reminded me several times to install a deadbolt, and I never got around to it.  Anyone can forget to lock a door, but it takes a real idiot to repeatedly ignore good advice!

When I lived with my brother we had our bikes both stolen from the garage in broad daylight when I came home from school to make some lunch...so you have my sympathies as well.

Mutterback, out of interest do you guys do something similar to uk, with stamping the frame with your post code (zip code) as proof of ownership?

Can you register these details with local bike shops, etc?

Thanks everyone.

This definitely falls into the category of "ignoring good advice" as Hook says.  I've registered much cheaper bikes - but somehow never got around to that for this one, and left it unlocked in the garage.

One lump, and some good music thank you very much!
