Blue Nile Remasters
Posted by: J.N. on 24 November 2012
Anyone have the new 'AWATR' or Hats' remasters? A friend reckons that they sound cleaned-up and very good (c/w bonus tracks), but I have my doubts. The samples on iTunes are obviously louder than the (excellent) original mixes by The Scottish Company - and that's normally a bad sign of a reduced dynamic range.
The bonus tracks/mixes sound interesting though.

Hi John,
I have both remasters, but havn't compared the CD's yet. I'll be be buying the LP remasters and compare them as well next month. There are a number of excellent blue nile songs in existance that were not included in the extras, as well as 'live' recordings, that hopefully might surface one day. I'll let you know what I think in the next few days.

Hard to imagine them really improving on the originals. For quite a while the originals were considered definitive in terms of quality for the genre, demonstrating comprehensively that CD didn't HAVE to sound shite. They were used for many a system demo. And AWATR and Hats are also great music.

No, no and no.
That would be my straight comparison between older and new. Fixing what wasn't broken with a dose of loudness and little else. The friend who bought them and allowed me to do a straight comparison now looks sheepish.
Ugh.

Sorry guys but using the word deluxe for HATS is a joke. Seems like cashing in on Paul releasing Mid Air to me and I agree theydon't sound that good.

So is there any improvement in sound quality?

No, not at all.

Thanks Mike, money saved. Now what other music should I spend it on?
